Homeless Resource Day

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services is hosting Homeless Resource Day (HRD) on Thursday, November 15, 2012 from 9:00am-3:00pm at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park, 506 South Frederick Avenue, Gaithersburg, Maryland 20877.
To participate in Homeless Resource Day as a donor or sponsor, send an email to HHSHRD@montgomerycountymd.gov or call 240-777-4565. A member of the Homeless Resource Day Planning Committee will be in touch with you.

The 2012 Germantown Oktoberfest will be held on Saturday, October 6 at High Point Farm & Catering, 23730 Frederick Road, Clarksburg. Volunteers are needed in shifts between 7:00am and 9:30pm. Help with set-up, tear-down, activities, and parking. Visit the website for further details.

Junior Achievement of Greater Washington
|
 Junior Achievement of Greater Washington (JA) is a non-profit organization that gives young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success plan for their future, and make smart academic and economic choices. Our corporate and community volunteers deliver relevant, hands-on experience that give students from kindergarten through high school knowledge and skills in financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship.
Montgomery County Public Schools has selected Junior Achievement as its preferred partner to meet the State of Maryland Mandate for Financial Literacy Education at the middle school level. Junior Achievement provides the 5-lesson JA Economics for Success program to every 6th grade student during social studies class- reaching over 10,000 students at 40 schools each year.
Adult volunteers are needed to teach one hour per week for 5 weeks or for a half day at a school, date and time convenient to them. Opportunities range from September - June during the school day. Corporate partnerships and team-building events are welcome. No teaching experience is necessary as JA provides all training, interactive lesson plans and staff support.  The Heyman Interages Center helps create a more age-integrated community by promoting improved communication, understanding, and quality of life for older adults and youth.
Adults (ages 50+) are invited to learn about opportunities at Interages for the 2012-2013 school year at our Volunteer Open House. There are many ways to get involved such as helping students from Pre-K to High School improve academically, socially, and emotionally or plan and lead interactive programs. The Montgomery County Board of Elections is seeking school-age students, grades 6-12, to serve as Election Day student aides during the 2012 Presidential General Election, Tuesday, November 6, 2012. Students and their guardians must attend mandatory training to serve on Election Day and, if applicable, to receive Student Service Learning (SSL) credits. Students are placed in neighboring precincts according to their home addresses. This initiative combines civic participation and the opportunity to observe democracy in action. This program is available to all students within a public, private, independent, religious or home-school setting located in Montgomery County. U.S. citizenship is not a pre-requisite to participate. Students with bilingual and American Sign Language skills are encouraged to apply.

Save the Date for Montgomery County's Community Service Day,  Saturday, October 27, 2012. Projects will be available the week of October 22nd-28th! If you are looking for a volunteer project, a few opportunities are posted now on our website. Organizations are continuing to post projects so check back for more!
We are also looking for community groups, businesses, and nonprofit organizations to plan their own projects for the week of October 22nd-28th! A project can be anything from a stream clean-up to organizing a food drive to assisting with a large mailing. If you are planning your own project tell us about it by filling out the Community Service Week Project Idea Form.

9/11 Day is the international movement to observe September 11 every year as a day of charitable service
 and doing good deeds. It was established as a way to forever remember and pay tribute to the 9/11 victims, honor those that rose in service in response to the attacks, and remind people of the importance of working more closely together in peace to improve our world. Today millions participate annually by taking time out on 9/11 to help others in need, in their own way.

Recently, Governor Martin O'Malley officially declared September 29, 2012 an Interfaith Day of Service, calling on all Marylanders to engage in community service projects. The Interfaith Day to Serve is a regional effort by the states of Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. In Maryland, service activities will build on Governor O'Malley's strategic goals of eradicating childhood hunger by 2015, and restoring the health of the Chesapeake Bay by 2025.

United Against Hunger

As a part of the upcoming statewide Day to Serve, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is holding a food drive "United Against Hunger" on September 29, 2012 from 12:00pm-4:00pm to benefit Manna Food Center. The donations collected will go to help feed the hungry in our local community of Montgomery County.
Each family attending is asked to bring a day's worth of non-perishable food items as price of admission.
See Manna's Food Wish List. There will be fun activities, raffles, and concessions to participate in at the event. The goal is to fill the 26 ft. truck that will be on site!

Volunteers are needed to teach Bone Builders classes at locations in Brookeville, Cabin John, Cloverly, Sandy Spring, Takoma Park and White Oak. The daytime classes are designed to prevent and slow the development of osteoporosis. The classes also help regular participants increase bone density naturally, an effective option for those who may not wish to use anti-osteoporosis medicines. Each one-hour session includes balance and weight training. Because this program is staffed by volunteers, there is no class fee.
Osteoporosis causes bones to become thin and easily broken. Although osteoporosis can strike at any age, it affects one in three women and one in eight men over the age of 60. One out of every two women and one in four men over 50 will have an osteoporosis related-fracture in their lifetime.
Volunteer leaders receive a full day of free training and ongoing supervision by a master trainer. The next training is scheduled for Friday, September 14 at the Mid County Community Recreation Center in Silver Spring. Space is limited. The Center is located at 2004 Queensguard Road in Silver Spring.

September 1 - Pianist to accompany the music therapist in a Glee Club with middle and high school students. Intermediate to advance piano skills with ability to read chords is needed. Rehearsals will be on Mondays from 3:30pm-4:30pm, and volunteers will need to be available to accompany the group in a few local performances.

September 5 - National Arboretum Docent. Do you enjoy helping visitors experience a new place? Do you enjoy beautiful gardens? Help visitors enjoy a pleasant experience while visiting the National Arboretum by serving as a volunteer docent. Docents assist visitors at the front desk by answering questions, suggesting gardens to visit, providing helpful information and giving directions. New volunteer docents are teamed up with veteran docents. Attend a 1 hour training to learn the about the details of what it takes to serve as a docent. Contact: Tanya Zastrow, 202-245-4563
September 8 - Silver Spring Jazz Festival. The Silver Spring Jazz Festival is a day/evening of free concerts on September 8th from 4:30-10:00pm. The headliner this year is Sergio Mendes. Volunteers needed to help with the set up and clean up of the festival site, as well as help during the festival day. There are four volunteer shifts from 12:00am-4:00pm; 1:00pm-5:00pm; 5:00pm-9:00pm, 8:00pm-12 midnight. Contact: Elizabeth Gallauresi, 301-793-2928
September 28 - So What Else Environmental Friendly Festival. On Sunday September 28 2012, from 10:15am-2:30pm, an Environmental Friendly Festival will be held at the Washington Convention Center. So What Else is looking for 10 volunteers to help set up, be a part of crowd control, meet-and-greet, and participate in the Green Team which breaks down materials in eco-friendly ways. October 6 - Harvest Festival at the Agricultural Historical Park It's time for the annual fall Harvest Festival celebrating what "Life on the Farm" was like back in the early 1900's. Lots of volunteers are needed to help park naturalists and historians show our visitors what crafts, machinery, food, and games were like back then during the fall harvest time. This is a family oriented activity that is very popular, so we need lots of volunteers! Volunteers are needed from 10:30am to 4:30pm. Lunch is provided. Please click here to sign up. MCPS Student Service Learning (SSL) Hours
National Portrait Gallery Seeks Volunteer Docents - The National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution is seeking volunteers to lead general tours of both the permanent collections and special exhibitions. Activities Assistant - Learn techniques and skills on interacting with non-communicative residents at Asbury Methodist Village. Assist residents in wheelchair's and walkers to and from the programs. Encourage and motivate residents to attend and participate in programs. Provide companionship and stimulation to withdrawn residents. Must be able to push wheelchairs throughout the building. Must be able to encourage and motivate residents to attend programs.

Care for Hero Dogs - Care for dogs in the Hero Dogs kennel once per week for a two-hour shift. Back-up and emergency volunteers are also needed. Morning and afternoon shifts are two hours long; late evening shift is approximately 30 minutes. During the shift you will be providing the basic care for the dogs such as grooming, feeding and exercise.

Skilled Trade Volunteers - Rebuilding Together needs volunteers skilled in electrical, roofing, plumbing, contracting, and other trades to help low income homeowners make needed repairs and safety modifications to their homes. Volunteers may be called upon several times throughout the year to perform these tasks. Volunteers must fill out an application and sign a waiver before commencing work.
