We are so excited!  It's almost time for Montgomery County's long-awaited week of service and celebration. Community Service Day started right here in Montgomery County 25 years ago and went statewide, then nationwide (known as Make a Difference Day).  

  

What can you do? Where will you serve?

There are over 100 projects throughout the County looking for your help.  Register to volunteer for a project NOW!

 

A project can be anything from a stream clean-up to organizing a food drive.  If you have a project your group has planned for the week, tell us about it on the Community Service Week Project Form.   

 

Help Us Spread the Word! 

 

Can you volunteer a few hours to help us pass out brochures about Community Service Week?  Check out this list  to see where and when volunteers are needed.  Also, let us know if your group would like some brochures to pass out to your members!

Join 25,000 of your neighbors October 16-22 and volunteer during Montgomery County's Community Service Week!  Make a difference in your community by joining a project looking for volunteers, planning a project to meet a need in your neighborhood, or volunteering at a local nonprofit.  You can also stop by our volunteer engagement expos and open houses during the week to learn more about ways to get involved throughout the year.  To register a project or to volunteer and find out more information about ways to get involved the events that week, visit our website, www.montgomeryserves.org.

Jubilee Association of Maryland
Jubilee Association of Maryland is aJubilee Association of Maryland nonprofit organization that provides community-based residential services and supports to adults with developmental disabilities, such as Down Syndrome, autism, intellectual disabilities, epilepsy and cerebral palsy. Jubilee provides services to about 117 beneficiaries in 66 locations. Some live in apartments with a roommate or homes shared with two or three more people; some live in the family home. Many have live-in support staff to assist with everyday activities, such as cooking, bathing and dressing. Jubilee clients frequently get together for community activities like a holiday party or a shared meal.

There are so many opportunities to help Jubilee, especially during Community Service Week.   Some projects include:
  • Painting - Help to increase usable space in a Jubilee home by painting the laundry area basement floor!
  • Car Wash - Help to wash our fleet of cars that we use to transport clients! 
  • Landscaping - Help to clean up and beautify the yards at Jubilee houses!

October 1 - Harvest Festival at the Agricultural History Farm Park (MCPS SSL APPROVED). It's time for our annual fall festival celebrating what "Life on the Farm" was like at the turn of the century, back in the early 1900's. Held at one of our prettiest historic properties in Montgomery County, we need lots of volunteers to help our park naturalists and historians show our visitors what crafts, machinery, food, and games were like back then during the fall harvest time. This is a family oriented activity that is very popular, so we need lots of volunteers for both days! Lunch is provided. To sign up go to www.ParksVolunteers.org. October 1 - Germantown Oktoberfest (MCPS SSL APPROVED). 

Lots of opportunities for volunteers, especially students wishing to earn SSL hours. Some physical tasks are required such as delivering messages, emptying trash containers and light lifting. There is also an opportunity for Boy Scouts to earn service hours by volunteering to help with directing traffic and parking cars. Contact Robert Longo at 301-529-4224 or email [email protected]

October 2 - Takoma Park Street Festival (MCPS SSL APPROVED). The Takoma Park Street Festival is made possible with the help from the community. Volunteers needed to assist with setting up and breaking down, as well as running the children's events. Lots of volunteer opportunities available for this annual event. October 7 and various dates throughout October - Eye Spy Halloween Train, Cabin John Regional Park (MCPS SSL APPROVED)
Friendly, costumed helpers are needed to hand out goodies and help with activities at our fun and not so scary Eye Spy Halloween train ride in Cabin John Regional Park! Face painters are needed for Saturdays and Sundays, too. Kids between 12 & 13 are welcome as long as a parent is there to help out too! Go to  www.ParksVolunteers.org to sign up! October 9 - Festa Italiana! (MCPS SSL APPROVED). Huge annual Italian street festival in DC sponsored by the Festa Italiana Foundation.   Help with set up or take down.  Be an information guide! Work at the entertainment stage, bocce court, or cultural activities.  Volunteers can come and enjoy the Festa for free! Contact Ronald Cappelletti, Volunteer Coordinator at 301-367-5878.

 

October 15 and through November (15-20 hours) - Community Impact Fund Volunteer Grant Reviewer (for Montgomery County). The United Way of the National Capital Area invites your participation to become a 2011 Community Impact Fund volunteer grant reviewer. United Way seeks to identify a diverse volunteer group of grant reviewers to make objective and independent recommendations about funding priorities. A limited time commitment is required during the months of October and November of approximately 15-20 hours over four to six weeks. Contact Levina Kim at 202-488-2021. 

 

October 16 - 22 Over 100 Community Service Week Projects Throughout Montgomery County!

 

October 28 -  Halloween Extravaganza, Meadowside Nature Center(MCPS SSL APPROVED). Volunteer at this annual Halloween happening at Meadowside Nature Center. Kids come wearing costumes (volunteers can too!). We need help with activities, crafts, and site prep. Safe Routes Ambassadors - Safe Routes to School needs teachers, staff, parents, and others to help champion walking and bicycling! There are several ways you can get involved in your community and at your school and make a real difference. Volunteers lead campaigns, organize bike and walk events, attend fairs and back to school nights, and assist with various other activities. Stream Monitoring Volunteers for the City of Rockville (MCPS SSL APPROVED)  - Help protect streams and their aquatic life in Rockville, MD by monitoring stream health. Stream monitoring collects important 'snapshot' information on the condition of the citys three watersheds Cabin John, Rock Creek and Watts Branch. Volunteers will be provided with all necessary training, including in the measurement of water chemistry and the identification of aquatic life. Animal Lovers Help Out on a Farm (MCPS SSL APPROVED)Star Gazing Farm provides a safe haven for unwanted farm animals, and to offer educational opportunities to the public. Volunteers needed to carry out our mission by assisting in day to day farm work, take part in farm events by interfacing with the public, giving tours, working at sales/information tables. Requirements: must be able to work around large animals and in all kinds of weather. Contact Anne Shroeder at 301-349-0802.

 

Education, Outreach & Public Speaking Assistants - We're looking for outgoing people who will  serve as ambassadors for the Montgomery County Humane Society. You'll interact a wide range of ages and mixed cultural and economic backgrounds and educate them about responsible pet care, what happens at the shelter, how the community can help animals whether it's their own pets or the ones at the shelter who need new homes, and similar topics.
