Summer Sun

Summer is here! There are plenty of volunteer opportunities to help students fill their summer days and earn Student Service Learning (SSL) credit at the same time. Search the Montgomery County Volunteer Center (MCVC) SSL volunteer database here. Ushering at Unexpected Stage Company is one of many opportunities available.

Unexpected Stage Company seeks volunteers to usher for upcoming theatre performances of "Candy and Dorothy" at VisArts in Rockville Town Center. Ushers will be asked to arrive 1 hour prior to the start of each performance for preparation, passing out programs, and directing patrons, and to stay a half hour after the performance for light clean up. Ushers will have the opportunity to watch the performance free of charge. Several dates/times available between July 10 and July 31, including matinee and evening performances.

"Candy and Dorothy" is a comedic fantasy which imagines a meeting between Warhol superstar Candy Darling and Catholic Worker founder Dorothy Day.  Due to some mature themes in the production, we are seeking volunteers who are high school age and older.

VisArts is accessible by car and public transportation.  For more information, accessibility questions, or to sign up, please call 301-337-8290 or email [email protected].

SpotlightAgency Spotlight: Project Change

Project Change Project Change is comprised of youth and adults who believe that high-levels of youth engagement are essential to building strong, vibrant and healthy communities.  Youth and adult members have a desire to give back and have a deep commitment to ensuring that youth have a voice and play a significant role in making their community the best it can be.  The mission of this organization is to promote positive youth development and enhance youth leadership skills by engaging young people to contribute to their community through quality community service projects and peer mentoring.

Some benefits of volunteering include:

  • Discovering new strengths and interests
  • Making connections for future jobs and pump up your resume or college application
  • Feeling good about yourself by doing good for others!
Project Change is unique. It's where youth have a voice! High school members serve on the Board of Directors to assist with governance of this organization.

There are numerous volunteer opportunities ready to be filled by enthusiastic individuals ready to engage in the community. Check out the opportunities here.
AmeriCorpsLogoA year of service through AmeriCorps is a great way to make an impact in your community!  Are you interested?  Below are two local programs who are recruiting members now to start their term of service in September including a position here at the Volunteer Center

Project CHANGE AmeriCorps Program:  Based in Montgomery County, members enable organizations to expand service offerings, improve delivery of services, run programs more efficiently, and reach a larger segment of the target population. CHANGE, which stands for "Collaboratives Helping America's Neighborhoods Grow and Excel," captures the spirit of the program.

Volunteer Maryland: With locations all throughout the state, members build stronger, healthier communities by empowering all Marylanders to take action. They mobilize thousands of volunteers to tackle projects that address the environment, education, public safety, homeland security, and human needs across Maryland. Volunteer Maryland is an AmeriCorps program of the Governor's Office.

AmeriCorps positions are available nationwide. Check out the AmeriCorps website to learn more about the program as a whole and to see if there is one for you!
