Help us create a library for the people of La Union Tejalapan in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico!
Mingei
is creating and supporting a library in La Union, the most remote of
the carving villages we work with, home to many talented woodcarvers
who create wondrous, whimsical folk art figures.
Carmen Deedy, popular storyteller, children's author and former NPR
commentator, and John McCutcheon, well-known folksinger, will perform
an evening of Latin Story and Song at the Decatur Library at 7:15pm on
July 29, 2008. This benefit event is co-sponsored by Mingei and the Georgia Center for the Book.
This event is free and open to the public, but please consider making a donation to help the Mexican Library!
In
order to involve the people of La Union in the effort, Mingei has
commissioned reading figures from the carvers of La Union -- mermaids,
demons, animals, farmers reading books. 20% of sales of these figures
will be returned to La Union for the library project. These wonderful
figures will make their debut at the performance on July 29.
Mingei will also be selling Carmen and John's books and CDs. Get them signed!
Sample tacos from El Tesoro after the performance! Mingei
is partnering with Libros Para Pueblos,an organzation buidling
libraries in the rural state of Oaxaca, Mexicoto create the La Union
Library.
Donations to Libros Para Pueblos are tax deductible. To earmark your donation for the La Union library, please donate through Mingei World Arts. Make checks payable to The Oaxaca Lending Library Foundation, with Libros Para Pueblos, La Union in the subject line.
Please be generous!

Books, books and more books You may have noticed that Mingei is carrying a greater variety of books-- photography, non-fiction, children's books and even a few novels-- that help place the objects in our store in context and illuminate us about our world. What should we be reading? What other books should be in our store? We'd like to hear from you! Please click here to send us your list!
Book Club at Mingei Many of you have expressed an interest in reading books with other Mingei shoppers, and an enthusiastic customer has taken on this idea and has organized The Mingei Book Club, which will focus on narrative non-fiction. The first meeting will be Tuesday, September 9, at 7:30, p.m., and the book will be Three Cups of Tea, by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. Copies are available at Mingei.
