December Book Club: Poetry

Anytime between Tuesday, December 15th and Wednesday, December 30th

Join us online as we explore audio and visual poetry, available for free on the internet. Poets.org, from the Academy of American Poets, offers free audio clips of poetry read by the poets.  Most of the audio clips are from contemporary poets, but a few classics such as Robert Frost's 'The Road Not Taken' are available as well.

The OSU Urban Arts Space will be closed from December 19th and reopen January 5th of 2010.  Rather than cancel the club for December, please share your poetry favorite on our blog, or email your thoughts at uas@osu.edu.  The club will meet again on Wednesday, January 24th from noon to 1pm.

Sharing the Experience of Art
with the Blind

Wednesday, December 16th
12 to 1pm

Join Wright State University's Professor Flach and graduate student Stephanie Auld in a discussion of their research into the work featured in our current exhibition, Tactile Color. Their study is directed at understanding how those with visual impairment experience fine art using the B-Code, a technique developed by Tactile Color
artist SallyB. Don't miss this opportunity to learn how cognitive psychologists study the experience of art.

What's happening to the inner climate?

Thursday, December 17th
5 to 7pm

We've been keeping one eye on COP15 , the UN conference on global climate change, taking place in Copenhagen Dec 7-18, and wondering what its outcome might mean for the planet.   We've decided to take action by teaming up with Art of Hosting Conversations that Matter and presenting the opportunity to discuss climate change.

What relation do you see between the inner climate and outer climate change?

What change in the inner climate would help us to imagine a sustainable future?

What story about sustainability are we learning to tell?

Please RSVP to livingston.28@osu.edu by Tuesday 12/15 so that we can arrange our space appropriately.

This series is part of our after-work programming offered Thursday evenings. Before the show, stop by Tip Top Kitchen & Cocktails and ask for the Urban Artists' Special: It's very special indeed and it's only $3.

Tactile Color
October 6th, 2009 through February 6th, 2010

Okeeffe
Tactile Color showcases the artwork of SallyB, who creates touchable fabric interpretations of master works, bringing the two-dimensional art world directly into the hands of the viewer.  The project began as a way to bring significant artworks to the blind or those with low vision, but has become a genuine example of universal design and a wonderful experience for everyone.

On display are several of SallyB's pieces, including interpretations of Van Gogh, Joan Miró, and Franz Marc. Viewers are free to explore the works alone or with a guided tour.
