The 2009 Arts Scholars Juried Exhibition
features work from high-achieving students from all years
of study who share a joint interest in the Arts, including music,
visual arts, design, dance, and theatre. Students major in many areas
across campus, including many non-Arts majors. This exhibition gives
students an opportunity to experience the jurying process and the
hanging and promoting of a professional show. Performers for the opening are also Arts Scholars, many of whom are music majors or plan to become professional musicians.
This reception is part of our after-work programing offered
Thursday evenings. Before the reception stop by Tip Top Kitchen & Cocktails and ask for the Urban Artists' Special: It's very special
indeed and its only $3.

See it. Say it. Hear it. A Visual Description Workshop
|
 Wednesday, February 4th 3:30 - 6 pm
Learn to translate the visual components of artwork into vivid, verbal images making your space more accessible.
Using
the OSU Urban Arts Space as a laboratory, this workshop offers training
and hands-on experience. Participants will learn to create visual
descriptions of artwork that inspire the imagination and provide access to people who are blind or have low vision
while enhancing museum and gallery tours for everyone. Learn how to
give visually descriptive tours in person, in writing and through audio
recording.
Pastries will be provided by Arts Priori and gourmet coffee by Café
Brioso. Space is limited, so please R.S.V.P. by February 2nd to (614)

Thursday, February 12th 5:30 to 7:30 Overground Percussion Group Exploring a realm outside of traditional tonal percussion, this
Columbus-based quartet performs eclectic chamber percussion works using
found instruments, world percussion, traditional acoustic instruments,
and occasionally electronics. Come feel these fresh beats.
Tuesday, February 17th 12 to 1pm Machinal Preview with Director Lesley Ferris Join us during the lunch hour for a preview of the OSU Theatre Department's winter performance of Machinal, written by female playwright Sophie Treadwell. Locally hand-roasted coffee is generously
provided by Cafe Brioso.
Thursday, February 26th 6 to 8pm Ohio Art League Community CritiqueArtists and patrons come together to discuss artists' new work, design, and direction.

Call for Entries

BIGG: Breakthrough Ideas in Global Glass
is a dynamic collaboration among The Ohio State University, OSU Glass
Program, OSU Urban Arts Space, Hawk Galleries and Steuben Glass.
Together we will discover and introduce to the public a select group of
artists with a conceptual and working engagement in glass. This collaboration demonstrates a commitment to advancing
new and innovative glass art worldwide. Through an international
juried selection process and critical writing about work in the field,
we intend to expand the discourse about glass art globally.
This
exhibition will be presented from July 10 through October 10, 2009 at
the OSU Urban Arts Space and Hawk Galleries in Columbus, Ohio.
Deadline: March, 9th.

Ohio Art League 98th Annual Juried Exhibition January 27 - March 27
 At the end of January the OSU Urban
Arts Space will shed winter with the Ohio Art League 98th Annual Juried Exhibition. These annual juried exhibitions are the backbone of OAL's
artistic programming, presented annually since 1910. This spring's
juror is David Pagel,
Associate Professor of Art Theory and History and Chair of the Art
Department at Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California.
Mr. Pagel is also a regular contributor to the Los Angeles Times as an
art critic.
In 2009, OAL celebrates its 100th anniversary, this exhibition is the first event of this
historic year.

The 2009 Arts Scholars Juried Exhibition
features work from high-achieving students from all years
of study who share a joint interest in the Arts, including music,
visual arts, design, dance, and theatre. Students major in many areas
across campus, including many non-Arts majors. This exhibition gives
students an opportunity to experience the jurying process and the
hanging and promoting of a professional show. Work in both performative and visual forms illustrates the diversity of
skills and creativity among Arts Scholars. Jurors hail from the
university community as well as the greater Columbus community. This
show has traveled, over the past four years, from campus to the Short
North to downtown. Arts Scholars appreciate the support you provide for
the development and expression of their creative interests.
