The Marotta Hour
Featuring Mike Shiflet

Mike Shiflet
Thursday, Decemeber 18th
6:30 to 8pm

Stay downtown after work every third Thursday of the month and check out new sounds curated by local musician and international composer Larry Marotta.

This month Mike Shiflet  will activate the OSU Urban Arts Space with analog noise generators controlled by his Mac. The result: a luscious mix of rich drones and fluttering, frequency-jumping noises.

Mike Shiflet is a sound artist now living in Columbus after returning from time abroad in rural Hyogo, Japan.  In addition to recording as a solo artist, he has been involved in a variety of groups ranging from the violin-led improv group Burning Star Core and the laptop duo Scenic Railroads to performance troupe Noumena and cathartic sludge/noise band Sword Heaven. From 1998 until earlier this year, he ran GMBY Records and released one hundred albums by improv and noise artists from across the globe.

The Marotta Hour is an electro-acoustic music series featuring unexpected sounds from free jazz to electronic to free-form improvisation. Come and hear some of the most cutting-edge musicians and composers from Columbus and beyond.

This series is part of our after-work programing offered Thursday evenings. Before the show stop by Tip Top Kitchen & Cocktails and ask for the Urban Artists' Special: It's very special indeed and its only $3.

Alan Crockett: Mark Making
Opens: November 6  - January 24

From his earliest figurative narrations to his suggestive pre-figurations of bountiful color, Alan Crockett has always been a painter's painter; dedicated to the canvas, to the brush, to the gesture. His retirement this year forms the occasion for this mini-retrospective of a life in the studio, and a life dedicated to art, teaching, and family.

Mark Making traces, through paintings and drawings, some dating back to undergraduate work, Crockett's prolific output in the studio and offers viewers the opportunity to really see and understand the meaning of a life-long artistic practice.  On view are selections from Crockett's thirty-six years of research into the power of symbol and metaphor, the nuances of investigation and discovery, the subtleties of poetic color, the possibilities of line, shape, gesture. All contribute to his adventurous journey of learning to speak the language of art and life through the painted canvas.

Co-curated by Prudence Gill and Jan O'Dea.
