Tom Beardslee Solo Acoustic Performance
|
 Wednesday, December 10th 12 to 1pm
Beardslee sews together loose threads of afropop and americana
to create tightly-woven melodies under cozy lyrics.
He has made several trips to West Africa to study highlife, soukous, Afrobeat, and traditional music. He also worked in Ghana as a studio and live guitarist, playing with musicians like Okyerema Asante, Pat Thomas, Jewel Ackah, Sharon Katz, and members of Osibisa. And he toured all of Ghana with Amakye Dede's Super High Kings, as well as in Togo and Cote D'Ivoire.
In the US, Tom has worked with musicians from all over the world since his early teens. He has played styles as diverse as flamenco, punk, reggae, ska, rockabilly, blues, country, bluegrass, funk, and soul. His diverse musical wanderings have led him to work with such artists as Country Joe McDonald, Sekouba Bambino, Kaikpai Ukpendi, Big Dread, and Alassane Sarr.

Join us in welcoming Marion Franklin High School's student-run theatre company, Rising Phoenix Threatre Productions. With the guidance of their theater teacher, Todd Decker, the students have created an avant-garde performance featuring music, movement and prose. Inspired by the work in our current exhibition, Alan Crockett: Mark Making, the piece is designed by the students, and will be performed in the OSU Urban Arts Space on Thursday evening, followed by an encore matinee on Saturday.
Rising Phoenix Theatre Productions was co-founded by members Decker, high-school senior Codi Cordle, freelance actor Billy Crutcher, and high-school sophomore Jeffery Rhoden.

Alan Crockett: Mark Making Opens: November 6 - January 24
From
his earliest figurative narrations to his suggestive pre-figurations of
bountiful color, Alan Crockett has always been a painter's painter;
dedicated to the canvas, to the brush, to the gesture. His retirement
this year forms the occasion for this mini-retrospective of a life in
the studio, and a life dedicated to art, teaching, and family.Mark Making traces, through paintings and drawings, some dating back to undergraduate
work, Crockett's prolific output in the studio and offers viewers the
opportunity to really see and understand the meaning of a life-long
artistic practice. On view are selections from Crockett's thirty-six
years of research into the power of symbol and metaphor, the nuances of
investigation and discovery, the subtleties of poetic color, the
possibilities of line, shape, gesture. All contribute to his
adventurous journey of learning to speak the language of art and life
through the painted canvas.
Co-curated by Prudence Gill and Jan O'Dea.
