145 years, looking forward

On March 3, 2011, YWCA Boston marks 145 years since its founding in 1866. YWCA Boston has been a durable organization because of its adaptability. Over all these years we have been able to shift our programs to make sure that they meet current needs, always keeping an eye on the future.

Given this forward-thinking spirit, what better way to celebrate our 145 years than by highlighting two exciting upcoming opportunities for you to be involved with YWCA Boston? From a nation-wide weekend of anti-racism advocacy, to an afternoon celebrating the accomplishments of local women, we hope that you will be part of the next chapter in our ongoing effort to eliminate racism and empower women.

Last April, over 2,500 people in the Greater Boston area joined others across the country by taking a Stand Against Racism. This year, between April 29 and May 1, YWCA Boston asks you to join us in our ever-growing national advocacy days. The Stand Against Racism's message is simple, but powerful: Racism still exists, and it can't be ignored or tolerated.

"As we promote inclusion, we inevitably must continue the fight against exclusion based on race," says Mark Michalowski, Partner at Holland & Knight and member of YWCA Boston's Stand Against Racism steering committee. "Personally, having grown up in Boston during the busing years and attended the Boston Public Schools until 1977, I observed racism first hand and witnessed its destructive effects on the fabric of our City."

"Since that time, we as a community in Boston have taken great strides toward equal opportunity and inclusion. However, complacency is often a byproduct of success, and racist attitudes often lurk just beneath a veneer of tolerance - Stand Against Racism reminds us that we need to remain vigilant and united against any ignorance and intolerance that remains hidden by that veneer."

YWCA Boston asks you to join in our effort to raise awareness. Your business, school, community group, or even group of friends can sign up as a participating site and make a stand in whatever way your group thinks best.

Attorney Michalowski's firm participated in last year's Stand and will participate again this year. "The Stand Against Racism is an active and very tangible expression of unity designed to gather institutions across a broad swath of society. It also provides thoughtful and active programming for our staff to embrace, enriching our own corporate culture."

anita hill to keynote academy of women achievers celebration

Noted professor and author Anita Hill will be keynote speaker at YWCA Boston's 17th Annual Academy of Women Achievers Celebration Luncheon on June 15th.

Professor of Social Policy, Law, and Women's Studies at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University, Hill has worked extensively in the areas of international commercial law, bankruptcy, and civil and women's rights, was the co-editor of Race, Gender and Power in America (1995) and has contributed to numerous scholarly and legal publications.

"Anita Hill is not only a first rate scholar, professor and speaker, she is also someone who thinks deeply and writes eloquently about some of the most important issues of our day," says YWCA Boston President Sylvia Ferrell-Jones.

Professor Anita Hill

"Her writings on educational and social policy are thought-provoking and daring. Professor Hill's upcoming book, Reimagining Equality, on the concept of home and community and whether access to these key aspects of life can be guaranteed under the law will be a most interesting read. I can hardly wait to hear her speak at the YWCA Academy of Women Achievers Celebration Luncheon on June 15, and I'm eager to read her new book."
