If you are reading this from a cold climate I really feel for you because I am going to rub it in how great the weather has been! We have had spectacularly clear water, hardly any wind and fabulous diving. Sorry if you are not here right now but you should really be considering your next dive trip or if you are already here, get in the water!! Remember if you are thinking of an upcoming getaway November and early December are still very quiet here, no crowds and great weather!
Tiger Sharks!!
tiger shark Kohala Coast Shark Sightings
We have been excitedly monitoring the tiger shark sightings that have been mentioned in the news lately.
Here are some interesting tidbits from the local papers. Tiger sharks were being sighted sporadically through the month of September from Helicopter and from Shore. There were 15 sighted in one day within a 5 mile stretch. The sharks appeared to range between 6-14 feet long. There was very little feeding behavior seen other than some schools of fish that they were snacking on. Beaches were closed during times the sharks were sighted by fire department helicopters.

There is no definitive reason why there would be more shark sightings right now. Theories include that they may be pupping as their mating season is believed to be January and February. One researcher thought the calm clear waters we have been experiencing has made spotting them easier than usual.

We had the luck of having two sightings from Kohala Diver in fairly deep water. They seemed to be hanging on the surface. It is always amazing to see these beautiful creatures in nature. While sharks sometimes get a bad rap because they are powerful creatures, if we treat them with respect and use safe practices in the water we can co exist with them and appreciate them for what they are, an invaluable part of the ocean Eco system. They are vitally important to the survival of all ocean species.

Full Moon Night Dive
reef scene October 11th 2008
We are planning to do our full moon night dive on October 11th. This happens to be the same day as the ironman race. We are planning a 3:45 meet time which should put us out of the range of traffic congestion. It will be a two tank trip. First a twilight dive then a night dive at two different locations. Moon rise is at 4:10 PM which will mean a bright moon high in the sky!
