Greetings!
Thanks for subscribing to our latest news from the Kohala coast. We are diving daily and conditions are as good as it gets! eighty degree water, good visibility, and lots of dolphin and turtle activity around. Sorry to rub it in to those of you not in Hawaii at the moment but it might be time to start thinking about coming for our slower season in September and October when conditions are awesome and there is lots of availability and good hotel rates everywhere you go!

coral logoKohala Divers is involved with CORAL REEF ALLIANCE and we are working on putting voluntary standards in place for all ocean activities in the waters of the big island. We need the help of anyone interested in taking part and voting on issues. Any residences interested in volunteering some time to be part of the process can come into Kohala Divers to pick up a taskforce application. Once preliminary standards are drawn up by us on the subcomitees you can go online and vote on issues and help give imput. We are excited to see operators taking responsibility for sustainable tourism and the more volunteers we have the more effective the program will be. Click on the coral reef logo to find out more of what the orginization is doing around the world.

We have been excitedly awaiting the release of the new DC800 camera from sealife for quite a while! This new release is an 8 mega pixel camera with improved battery life and lots of new features. This awesome white tip shark silhouette shot was taken by Michael Pence at ulua caves. Michael just completed his Advanced Open Water training with Kohala Divers. He got this shot with a  cannon elf in housing with no flash on. Sharks are never the easiest subjects since they move fast and they always look a lot closer than they are through that view finder! Nice job Michael!

Fall Schedule for Kohala Diver Boat and Crew
For those of you planning a trip over in the fall that is a great decision! The dive conditions are usually excellent and the crowds are gone! You will have beaches to yourself and get great room rates. Just as a heads up Kohala Diver will be out of the water from October 13th through the 16th for its annual dry dock or "boat spa". She will be getting new deck and bottom paint and get a total mechanical makeover.

October 22th through the 26th some of the Kohala Divers crew will be heading off to Vegas for the dive industry trade show. We will be operating some days during those dates depending on available crew, so call ahead to schedule dive days. We will be back October 27th with new products and other great ideas to share with you!

white urchinPebble collection Urchin
We have been tracking this interesting find the last couple of weeks. These urchins usually gray to purple and very nocturnal are not commonly seen in daytime. This one has been cruising all over the sand and reef in the middle of the day at outside crystal cove. He is very bright white and has lots of very active tube feet. The Hawaiian name for this urchin is hawa'e po'hia. Po'hia meaning grey, usually the urchins color, and hawa'e meaning useless person because these shallow water urchins were not considered good eating. This guy is pretty cool and we will be looking for him everytime we dive outside crystal. Leave it to divers to get sentimentally attached to a sea urchin huh?
