Enter the Conversation: Water and Liturgy
Thursday, March 8, at 7 p.m.
The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine

From baptism to funerals to ritual cleansing, water is used in most religions to signify passage-into life or into death, from the everyday to the to sacred. A woman's water breaks just before her child is born. Rivers carry away the dead. Everywhere we see spirit, we see water. It is above us, below us, inside us. Liturgy is a language of metaphor, and water can be used as a metaphor for nearly everything. Water connects different countries by serving as boundary or transport; water connects spiritual traditions by reminding us how little boundaries mean. The role it plays in our lives, and the emotions and ideas it evokes, do not change much between cultures. To explore the use of water in liturgy is to see the common human awe of the divine, as well as human gratitude for the mercy of nature.

Kyabje Gelek Rimpoche, distinguished teacher and founder of Jewel Heart, a Tibetan Buddhist Center will join Daisy Khan, Executive Director of the American Society for Muslim Advancement (ASMA), and The Reverend Tom Miller, Canon for Liturgy & the Arts at the Cathedral to examine how water is used and understood in the Abrahamic and Tibetan Buddhist traditions. The Very Reverend Dr. James A. Kowalski, Dean of the Cathedral, will moderate. An additional guest will be announced shortly.

The event is free; a contribution of $10.00 will be appreciated.  Reservations are not required.

Christ Church, Poughkeepsie, September 15 and 22

The purpose of the Diocesan antiracism training is to help us become aware of how the sin of racism impacts all of our lives, and how we all unconsciously and consciously participate in racist systems.  It is required for clergy and highly recommended for lay leadership.

Dialog is the foundation of the two-day workshop (9:00 -4:00). We use group exercises and examine scientific and historical evidence (video format) concerning the origins of the concept of race and its legacy.  Coffee and lunch are served and there is no cost to register and attend.

Of the hundreds of workshop participants, over the past four years, more than 75% have found the workshop to be "very useful" or "extremely useful" in their work and daily lives.

COST: The workshops are free to those serving in parishes of this diocese, or lay people who are congregants of the diocese, or diocesan/Cathedral staff.

For all others $50.00. Register and pay online by clicking on the link above, or contact Arlene Bullard abullard@dioceseny.org, tel 212 932 7363.

Polyhymnia: A Feast in Bavaria ~ Music in Eight Voices by Orlande de Lassus (c.1532-1594)
Saturday, March 10, 8 p.m. (Pre-concert lecture: 7 p.m.)
The Church of St. Ignatius of Antioch, 552 West End Avenue (enter on W. 87th St.)

Missa Bell'Amfitrit'altera
Magnificat quarti toni
Motets for Church & State

Orlande de Lassus is remembered as the greatest and last of the Franco-Flemish school of composers. Engaged by Albrecht V of Bavaria and retained in his role as court composer by Albrecht's son Wilhelm V (the Pious), Lassus led the most prestigious of the German court chapels, rivaled only by that of the Holy Roman Emperor himself.  Astonishingly prolific, Lassus composed a vast and varied agglomeration of music, much of it inspired by his time in Venice under the tutelage of the Gabrielis. Though representing only a small portion of his vast body of work, the eight-voice masses, magnificats and motets reveal a personal and highly original treatment of poly-choral music.  Polyhymnia will present an evening of music for eight voices drawn from Lassus inestimable legacy contained in the archives of the Bavarian Court Chapel. The centerpiece, the magnificent Missa Bell'Amfitrit'altera, will be framed by familiar motets such as the elegant Alma redemptoris Mater,  the poignant Osculetur me, as well as two motets for state occasions; Ergo rex vivat and Dic mihi quem portas.  Completing the program will be lesser known masterpieces such as the Magnificat quarti toni and two psalm settings; Ecce quam bonum and Deus miserator nobis.

Tickets $25 General Admission, $15 Students, Seniors and EMA.
