Episcopal Charities Sunday is this Sunday, March 7th
|
Episcopal Charities is our outreach arm. It currently supports 80 parish-based programs around the Diocese that deliver vital support to people who really need it.
In 2007 the Diocesan Convention passed a resolution that each year a Sunday be designated on which "parishes and missions take a special collection
to be donated to Episcopal Charities of New York to support feeding programs
which receive funding from Episcopal Charities of New York." We urge you to participate in Episcopal Charities Sunday, and give as generously as you can. To visit the Episcopal Charities website, click on the logo.

Undoing Racism Workshop offered by The People's Institute
for Survival and Beyond Friday, March 12, 6:30 - 8:30 pm
Saturday, March 13, 9:00 am - 7:00 pm
Sunday, March 14, 9:00 am- 3:00 pm The Cathedral of St. John the Divine
A 2 1/2 day workshop offering a comprehensive exploration of how racism shapes
American institutions, often without our conscious understanding that
it is doing so. Applicants should be individuals in positions to take
knowledge gained in the workshop back to their colleagues, institutions
and wider communities. The goal is to foster local work groups that
will continue the conversation and work toward institutional change.
The workshop
stresses learning from history, developing leadership, maintaining
accountability to communities of color, creating networks, undoing
internalized oppression, and understanding the role of organizational
gatekeeping in perpetuating racism.
Because the organizers recognize that many people and organizations are
struggling financially, they are offering a 50% scholarship ($175) for
this workshop.

New Caregiver Support Group at Church of the Ascension
| Providing care for a loved one can be a lonely task,
especially if it is just you and your loved one alone in the house, day after
day. Aside from family, there are few others who are available to lend support,
to pick up the pieces when you feel they are falling apart, and maybe no one
around who truly understands what it is you are going through. Every Friday
from 10:30 a.m.-Noon The Church of the Ascension is providing a support group
where caregivers can discuss what they are experiencing and share their thoughts
and feelings with others. The Rev. Mark Glidden, an Episcopal priest and
Psychotherapist, facilitates the group. The group meets at 7 ½ West 10th Street
in the ground floor of the Rectory. Contact Father Mark Hummell for further
information. Email or 212-254-8620. The group is free of
charge and open to all.

Taize - An
ecumenical service of chants, prayers, and readings by candlelight, with a Lenten theme
Sunday, March 14, 7:30 pm
St. Mark's Church, Mount Kisco
Taize is an international
and ecumenical monastic community founded in 1940 by Roger Schutz-Marsauche. His aim was to open up ways of healing the
divisions between Christians and through the reconciliation of Christians to
overcome conflicts within humanity.
Acquiring a house in Taize, near Cluny,
in SE France, he began by sheltering Jews and
other refugees in his home. After the
end of the Second World War, he obtained permission to welcome German prisoners
of war from a nearby camp. The first
brothers took life-vows in 1949. They
were all Protestant, of various backgrounds, but since 1969 they have been
joined by Roman Catholics. There are now
almost 100 brothers, from some 20 countries and every continent.
Music in the Taize style is done
in simple-to-sing repetitive chant, and is contemplative and quiet. The church
is lit by numerous candles, often with incense burning. A ritual of candle lighting is held for those
who wish to light a candle and offer up silent prayer for someone, with the
result being a beautiful atmosphere of candlelight, fragrance, meditation, soft
chants, and a strong sense of spiritual presence and unity. There will be no sermon or communion. Taize worship appeals to young and
old, persons of traditional faith as well as persons who consider themselves
spiritual but not religious. The service
is both mystical and dramatic. This is
one event to which you will want to invite your friends and neighbors.

| An Introduction to Centering Prayer Presented by Bruce Gardiner, Hosted by Br. Charles,
n/OHC Saturday, Mar 27 Holy Cross Monastery,
West Park
About Centering
Prayer: Centering Prayer is a method of response to God's invitation to
enter into loving intimacy and relationship. The practice prepares us to be
open, available, and present God's action and presence in the innermost recesses
of our being. It facilitates a process of interior transformation initiated by
God and leading, as we consent, to divine union. Centering Prayer facilitates
both the deepening of our personal relationship with Christ and release from the
attachments that hinder development of this relationship, through contemplation
and the unfolding of the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love. The
fruits of Centering Prayer are naturally and gradually experienced in daily life
with increased ability to cheerfully love and serve God and
neighbor.

Dancing Our Prayers A retreat led by The Rev. Gwyneth MacKenzie Murphy
Friday evening, April 30th - Sunday, May 2ndHoly Cross Monastery, West ParkMovement is an essence of life. Earth travels around the sun, bringing us the change of seasons; she whirls round and round, giving us the passage from night to day. Ancient comets brought water to earth, which moves from ocean to mist to snow to water. Blood courses through our bodies, so that we may breathe and live. During this weekend we will join the cosmic dance and experience prayer through movement. We will use simple gestures to Taize chants, interpret Scripture through movement, and invite our bodies to express our prayers, creating our own Psalms. No dance experience necessary. Please wear lose, comfortable clothing. The Rev. Gwyneth MacKenzie Murphy, a retreat leader and spiritual director, has been dancing all her life and doing Sacred Dance for over twenty years. She is the Vicar of St. Andrew's in New Paltz, NY and Episcopal Campus Pastor for SUNY New Paltz. Fee: $210; Deposit: $80. Phone 845-255-5098 ext. 3 or 845-633-4395. webmurph@mindspring.com

Monteverdi: Vespers of 1610 | Friday, Mar 19 at 7:30 p.m. St. Thomas' Church, Fifth Avenue
Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys under the direction of John Scott, accompanied by His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts http://www.hmsc.co.uk/,
England's leading early wind ensemble. One of the
great landmarks of western music, the Vespers of 1610 offers opulent sonorities,
innovative harmonies and beautiful melodic lines. In this masterpiece,
Monteverdi blends the newer baroque practice with the musical styles of the
Renaissance. The result is music that is both dramatic and sublime and which is
further enhanced by the exceptional acoustics of Saint Thomas Church. Purchase tickets online http://www.saintthomaschurch.org/music/concerts/ |
