When and how to use a Circular Polarizing Filter

October 2009

A circular polarizing filter is an essential tool for the nature photographer whether you are using a film or digital camera.

This filter can help to reduce glare yielding richer, more saturated colors.  It can be effective in any of the following situations:

  • darken the sky and have better definition between sky and clouds on a sunny day

  • reduce reflections on glass or the surface of a body of water

  • reduce glare on shiny or wet surfaces like river rocks and foliage
To use the filter, screw it on to the front of the lens.  Rotate the filter while looking at the effect through the view finder.  The polarization effect will be at a minimum when facing directly into the sun, or directly opposite the sun.  The effect will be at a maximum when facing at a right angle to the sun.

Be aware that not all lighting conditions have polarizing light.  If you notice no beneficial effect when rotating the polarizer filter, take it off.

A polarizing filter is one of the more expensive filters to buy.  To stretch your budget, instead of buying a polarizer for each lens, buy one filter for the largest diameter lens and purchase inexpensive step-down rings to allow the larger filter to fit your smaller diameter lenses.
