Photo gear for the savvy traveller

Traveling away from home with photo gear can present some challenges like how to find a balance between size and weight of gear, where to put it all and how to get acceptable results you'll be happy with when you get home.
Lens considerations - making more with less Camera lens technology has come a long way. Today there are zoom lenses that feature a large span of focal lengths in a single lens. Too good to be true, well maybe not. As focal length coverage increases, so does the price and weight of these lenses. Quality may not be quite as good as lenses that cover a smaller range, but quality may be perfectly adequate for the intended usage size, especially for the amateur photographer. Carrying one lens instead of two or three may be an important benefit to those with limited space.
Another important lens feature for the traveling photographer is built in stabilizing technology. For example, Canon's IS (Image Stabilization) lenses, or Nikon's VR (Vibration Reduction) lenses. While not a panacea, this technology can help photographers photograph at up to 3-4 stops (realistically more like 1-2 stops) slower shutter speeds with good results.
Some lenses that would fit this category would be: - Canon's EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM Lens
- Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens
- Tamron AF 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di LD VC (Vibration Compensation) Aspherical (IF) Macro Zoom Lens
- Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 AF DC II Lens for all Nikon DSLR Cameras

Tripod alternatives for camera stabilization
While I hate to photograph without my trusty tripod, there are situations where tripods are not allowed or are too cumbersome to bring along. In these scenarios it's nice to know there are other options.
Kirk Enterprises, a well known camera accessories manufacturer, make a product they call the "strap pod" (shown right). One end of the strap is attached to the camera using the tripod screw hole. The other end is held with your foot, but applying tension to the strap you increase the stability of the camera.
Another option I recently discovered is a clever monopod/tripod/walking stick called the TrekPod Go! Pro (shown in tripod configuration below). It can be used as a walking stick, converts to a monopod and lastly transforms into a tripod with a ball head. Hikers and air travellers will appreciate that it quickly separates into pieces no longer than 22" making it easy to carry in your luggage. It's also available in carbon fiber versions which weigh even less, but cost more.
