"Who's picking out dessert tonight?" My mother would ask this question as we sat down for dinner. You see we lived over the bakery and the first of six kids that finished their dinner went downstairs for that night's dessert. Eating quickly was probably not so good for the digestion system, but our plates were always loaded with vegetables and little meat. (With six kids meat was a luxury not a staple.) The result of the "dessert incentive" was that you never heard the cry of "eat your vegetables" in our house.
Every summer my parents packed us all up to head to Wading River. As most families in our community, we had one car that went home with Dad every week. Needless to say we went through dessert withdrawal. Every Sunday, Dad would pack up the leftovers from the bakery and bring them out to us. Mom would put some in the freezer. Some days after swimming lessons, mom took out some jelly donuts; heated them in the toaster oven and then rolled them in some cinnamon sugar. That was 50 years ago and I can still feel the warm jelly on the roof of my mouth. Recently I was talking to an old friend that shared those donuts and he said that was one of his most vivid memories of those summers.
Next week July 30th through August 6th the bakery will be closed for vacation. We hope not to inconvenience anyone but do as a friend of mine suggested. Create a "Vacation Survival Kit." Many of our items freeze quite well and some like the Pecan Raisin Ring tastes stupendous when slightly heated. Oh! and of course the Jelly Donuts.
Ask our staff and they can guide you to the best items.
As is our tradition, on Sunday July 29th from 12:00 till 3 all bakery items will be sold at 50% off.* As you can imagine this is a very popular event so we have extra staff scheduled. Please remember the sale starts at 12:00. See Details below.
Enjoy the rest of the summer and hope to see you again in August.
