The Thanksgiving holiday is next week. Everyone at Reinwald's is busy preparing. There are apples to peel, crusts to make, and mince to cook. Our special hours and ordering procedures are outline in the panel to the left. We are open Thanksgiving to ensure that you can get the freshest bread and cakes. Also please note that we are closed Friday so all the bakers can enjoy their holiday. Remember to pick up your rye bread for turkey sandwiches the day after Thanksgiving.
When I was a child we lived in Wading River, and even after we moved to an apartment over the bakery in Queens, we very often spent Thanksgiving there. I remember my one uncle always wanting to watch the football game, but my mom had a rule of no television with company in the house. The turkey must have been good because he came every year. After dinner it took ten of us to walk our dog and upon our return I often caught the TV on and a few glasses of Asbach Uralt being drunk. The TV always went off by the time everyone was back.
Thursday the 24th is officially proclaimed by our President as a National Day of Thanksgiving. It is a day to recognize the many blessings we have. It shouldn't be about football, shopping, or even parades. There is nothing wrong with those things, but it should not be the focus of Thanksgiving. Also it shouldn't be about the things that have gone wrong, or the things we want to change. It most certainly shouldn't be about politics or politicians.
Our blessings are many. Shut off the television and have a conversation. Look into the faces around your table. Enjoy the squeeze of your hand by your spouse. Sit by the fire with a glass of Asbach Uralt, a few cookies, and reflect on the positives in your life. Perhaps thanks to a higher power is in order.
Please accept the best wishes for a wonderful holiday from the entire Reinwald's Bakery Family.
