Greetings!

It is the beginning of December and signs of the holidays are everywhere. I have always lamented that the commercialization of Christmas has pushed the holiday all the way toward Halloween. While this view is justified, I am trying to view the positive results as well.

What is so wrong if we extend the season where more people try to see good in their fellow man. More people answer the appeals to help those less fortunate. As adults we appreciate the joy in children as the anticipation builds toward the actual celebration of Christmas.

Especially in our current environment, we should be encouraged to revel in every moment and peel away the layers of obvious commercialization to feel the real spirit of this season. If that is extended several weeks think of how good it can get!

At the bakery we embrace this season. It gives us the opportunity to celebrate our German heritage through baked goods. As we bake our Pfeffernuse and Christmas Stollen or assemble our gingerbread houses; the aromas and tastes rekindle memories from our past and culture.

We invite you to share with us the sights and smells of the holiday season. Many of our visitors have told me that some of our specialties have become part of their family's Christmas traditions. That makes the admittedly long hard hours at the bakery worth it!

Please have a warm and joyous December.

Sincerely,
Rich Reinwald

From the Reinwald Home Kitchen

German Bratwurst Chowder

This hearty, stick-to-your-ribs stew is great for a cold winter day meal or a starter dish at your holiday celebration and is ready to serve in about 1 hour. The combination of flavors and smells brings warm thoughts of a traditional Bavarian kitchen; a cast iron pot simmering over an open fire and sounds of laughter filling the room. Don't forget your Reinwald's rye bread to clean the bottom of your bowl!

Ingredients:

1 lb Bratwurst, fully cooked and cut into small pieces.
2 cups beef broth
1 Large onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
3 carrots, sliced
2 Russet Potatoes, cubed
4 cups cabbage, shredded
3 cups milk
1 cup Swiss cheese
3 Tbs flour
salt
pepper

Preparation:

In a Dutch oven or large stockpot, combine bratwurst, potatoes, onion, garlic, salt and pepper. Add beef broth and carrots. Bring to boil, stirring occasionally; then reduce heat. Cover pot and simmer for 15-20 minutes or until potatoes are almost tender. Stir in cabbage. Cook 10 minutes or until vegetables are tender.

Stir in 2 1/2 cups of the milk. In small bowl, combine remaining 1/2 cup milk with the flour and blend with whisk. Stir this mixture into the soup and cook on low heat, stirring frequently, until thickened. Add cheese stirring until melted. Serve immediately. Serves about 6 people.
