Greetings!

Even though the official start of fall was a couple of weeks back, only now does it begin to feel like it. Slowly the sound of crickets is melting away and unexpectedly has been replaced by the whoo of an owl. I haven't experienced that sound for quite some years and admittedly it kept me awake the first few nights. Now I am beginning to welcome it, as if the sound forces me into a deeper slumber. I learned a quick lesson here; that even if something is annoying a change in perspective can bring some positives to light and even turn disadvantages to advantages.

Other signs of the season are the fields full of Huntington's aspiring soccer players, football everywhere and slowly less boats out in our harbor. Colorful mums decorate many a walkway and the Fall Festival is coming to Hecksher Park.

The Bakery has gone under a great seasonal shift also. Most of the summer fresh fruits are a memory except of course the apples! Our Granny Smith Apple Tart is the "best ever", according to my French friend Jean Paul. We cook our own candy and caramel to dip fresh our apples. The pure natural vanilla gives our caramel apples a clean, bright taste.

My fall favorite are coconut custard and pumpkin pies. Our own blend of spices fills the bake shop with a wonderful aroma that forces me to bring a pie home. The positive side is that I'll get outside and enjoy the neighborhood while I balance out my calories with a walk.

Until next time, enjoy your days.

Sincerely,

Rich Reinwald

A German recipe to welcome in Autumn:
Weisswurst & Apples

4 Tbs butter

4 Macintosh apples, cored and sliced
8 Weisswurst or other mild, white sausages
salt and pepper to taste
1/4 Apple Cider/Juice
1/4 Cooking Sherry

Preheat oven to 350. In a skillet heat slightly cook apples in 3 tbs of butter over medium heat until they just start to feel soft, add salt and pepper. Put apples aside in baking dish. Brown sausages in remaining butter then add to baking dish (you could also slice into pieces before baking). Add the apple cider and sherry and bake for 20-25 minutes or until juices run clear in the sausage.

For a great side dish refer back to last year's newsletter for a roasted butternut squash recipe, click here.

And don't forget the fresh baked rye bread!
Taking care of your Long Island home

One of the best parts of living on Long Island is that we truly have 4 seasons. As the days get shorter and the nights get colder all sign point to a change of season. This time of year is great for preparing you home for the winter months. Temperatures are cool and comfortable, the perfect conditions to do some work. In between raking up the leaves, here are a few things that should be taken care of before the it is too cold.

  1. Check your furnace - You don't want to be left with no heat!
  2. If you have a fireplace make sure to clean your flue to prevent chimney fires. Make sure to keep the damper closed when not in use to prevent heat loss.
  3. Turn off all outside faucets from the cut off valve inside (usually in the basement)
  4. Put away anything that could blow away - Outdoor furniture, flower pots, garden hose & tools (make sure to clean them off so they are ready for the spring)
  5. Check for unstable tree limbs - As the leaves fall it is easier to see any branches that may cause problems. If a limbs looks as if it could cause damage to yours or your neighbor's property have it removed.
On a nice afternoon take a walk around your property. Check for anything that could cause a problem. Remember, keep bird feeders a distance from the house. Bird feed attracts rodents looking for a nice place to stay for the winter.
