Greetings!

As we approach the end of July some people are calling this "the summer that wasn't". At the bakery we enjoy the cooler temperatures as hot and humid weather presents extraordinary challenges to the baking process.

Next week the bakery is closed for vacation, it is nice to have the whole team off at one time. we hope not to inconvenience anyone too much and hope to see all of you when we return on August 4.

The Reinwald's are headed to Michigan to visit the University of Michigan where Greg will be going for his M.B.A. We will be visiting Dawn Food Products, a major supporter of the retail baking industry. We also hope to visit Cops and Doughnuts in Claire, Michigan. This 100 year old business was in danger of closing but members of the local police force rescued it. They know first hand the importance of their main street business and the value it adds to their community. Click here to watch the Fox News coverage of this story. Much of our trip will be focusing on retail bakery visits and to explore their connections to their communities.

Because of vacation we will be unable to give leftovers to the soup kitchens. Therefore this Sunday from 1pm to 5pm everything in the store except special orders will be 50% off. We hate to waste food.

Thanks for your continued readership and enjoy your days.

Hiking Trails right here on Long Island

When you ask out of state people about New York they almost always associate us with big city living. They rarely recognize that New York has some of the most beautiful landscapes around. Although Long Island does not have any great mountains or rivers there are still places to go that allow you to connect with nature and get some exercise all while enjoying the beautiful scenery. Make sure you bring along a snack, maybe some Oatmeal Cranberry cookies.

Growing up my parents had a summer house out east in Ridge, right next to the pine barrens. This expansive nature preserve has about 50 miles of trails that you could spend all day exploring. For information on entry points please call the Department of Environmental Conservation at (631) 444-0273.

If you are looking to stay a little closer to home Huntington has an 8 mile trail running through West Hills County Park. The Walt Whitman trail includes Jayne Hill, the highest point on Long Island. You can park at the county park entrance off Sweet Hollow Road.

Fresh fruit cakes are finally here...

blueberry cake Although it hasn't felt like it, summer is well underway. The perfect reminder is our fresh fruit cakes. Here at the bakery we wait for the fruit to be just right before we put it into our fresh baked crust. Blueberry and peach cakes have been flying out of the showcase, however it is not quite time for our famous plum cakes.

Our blueberry cake has blueberry pie filling and is piled high with fresh blueberries then dusted with powdered sugar. Did you know that blueberries contain tons of vitamin c, dietary fiber as well as antioxidants.

fresh peach cakeNothing says summer more than the sweet juices of peaches running down your cheek. Our fresh peach cake is a buttery crust with freshly cut peaches baked inside then topped with a sweet fruit glaze.

Enjoy the tastes of summer!

Everyone needs a vacation...

The bakery will be closing next week for a much needed vacation. While some of the staff will be enjoying a nice camping trip in Northern Pennsylvania, others will be taking advantage of some of the great activities available right here on Long Island.

We will be closed from
Monday, July 27 to Monday, August 3.

Stop by on Sunday July 26 after 1pm for our clear out sale. Everything in the store will be half price, excluding custom orders.

We will be back baking fresh on  August 4.
