Greetings!
Reinwald's Bakery asks all to join
us in celebration of Memorial Day. I
remember as a Cub Scout going to Pinelawn to put flags on graves. That is my lasting impression of this day, a
day of remembrance of those who died in war.
Oliver Wendell Holmes, a long serving Supreme Court Justice, took great
pride in marching in Memorial parades.
He was an incredible personality having fought in the Civil War and
serving on the Supreme Court until 1932.
He once said of the many civil war dead before the time of dog tags,
"They gave their all, they gave their very names." Huntington
will lay a wreath at our soldiers memorial in front of Town Hall at 9:30am on
Sunday. Reconnect with the real spirit
of our country.
Hopefully we will have some nice
weather that time can be spent outdoors.
Carole and I are looking forward to enjoying the calming effects of our
backyard. I know you are anxious
to be outside, but please check and clean your grill before using. Also be sure to check all gas valves, there
is no such thing as a small propane explosion.
Lastly, the Bakery will be open
until 3pm on Sunday and will be closed on Memorial Day, so please plan
accordingly.
Enjoy your Holiday
and Be Safe
Sincerely,
Richard Reinwald

The Story of Memorial Day
|
|
|
|
Memorial day, originally called Decoration Day was celebrated on May 30th to commemorate the soldiers fallen in the Civil War. After World War I it was expanded to honor fallen American soldiers of all wars and the date was changed to the last Monday in May, creating a nice three day weekend!
Cleaning up the yard, opening pools and family barbecues mark the unofficial start of the American summer. Sporting events such as the Indianapolis 500 have been taking place on Memorial Day since 1911. Parades and ceremonies take place at the community level like right here in Huntington as well as a national level Like the National Parade in Washington D.C. with constituents from all 50 states.
The holiday started right here in our state. Waterloo, New York is credited for birthing the holiday because they were the first to celebrate it consistently on the same day year after year starting in 1866. Waterloo did a great deal to gain national recognition of this holiday. The name "Memorial Day" was adopted in 1882 after some southern states, still bitter from a Union victory, did not want to accept the holiday. The name became official after World War II.
While you are enjoying your day off please take some time to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our Nation that gives us the opportunity to live as we do. Even if times are rough we must remember how lucky we are to live in the United States.
