Reinwald's Goes Green ...
Today it seems like there is no escaping the topic of environmental conservation. Newspapers and magazines are peppered with articles preaching the importance of conservation, recycling, and exploring new energy sources. The news channels play videos of politicians making promises on how they plan to fix the planet's problems. Sometimes with all of these messages being thrown at you it is easy to tune them out and the true meaning behind the message gets lost in all of the media noise. If you are exhausted by these relentless articles, don't worry this one is different.
At Reinwald's our stance is simple; Going green starts at a local community level. Businesses produce a lot more waste and consume a lot more energy than your average home. Although it is important for everyone to pitch in, businesses have an increased obligation. As a part of the community for 20 we have tried to always have a positive impact. Here are some of the ways we have changed:
The bakery is now equipped with extra efficient T-8 florescent lighting. The lights use about 85% less energy than incandescent bulbs and a third less energy than conventional florescent bulbs. This is an easy way for you to conserve in your home as well. Although the florescent bulbs are initially more expensive you will replace them less frequently (a florescent bulb lasts 10 times as long) and save a bundle on your electric bill.
We now use biodegradable shopping bags. Landfills and garbage dumps are filled with plastics and other materials that do not break down. Our shopping bags are made of a biodegradable material that disintegrate in 75 days. Remember don't just throw away shopping bags, there are so many ways to reuse them.
Reinwald's recycles it's used grease. Instead of dumping grease down the drain where it pollutes and clogs the towns drainage system we installed a grease catcher in our drain to filter it out. We have not had any requests for the grease to be converted to biofuel yet, your car may smell like donuts (not necessarily a bad thing!)
Installing Energy Efficient Ovens. The bakery will be closed from January 19 to 23 to replace our ovens with more efficient new ones. The ovens will save a lot of energy while allowing our bakers to produce more of your favorites. Please come in Sunday, January 18 after 1 O'clock and receive 50% off anything in the store. Make sure to come back on Saturday to enjoy the first batches out of the new oven!
With that being said, when thinking about environmental conservation we need to think on a more local and personal scale. "Going Green" not only involves being aware of the problems we are facing it means changing our lifestyles to help, and remember every little bit does count.
By buying locally not only do you support your community you also reduce your carbon footprint.
