Greetings!

Welcome to our Thanksgiving Issue. Reinwald's Bakery considers it a privilege to have our pies breads and cakes presented on your holiday table. This is a privilege  we take very seriously. We make everything right here in Huntington and the staff works many late hours to be sure you get the best and freshest baked goods.

We are offering a new feature this year; Online ordering. Your Thanksgiving Dessert is now only a click away by visiting Reinwaldsbakery.com. Especially for our e-club members we will include one fresh French Baguette with every  online order upon order pick up.

While we hope you can visit our bakery during this holiday, more important is to celebrate the day in the spirit it was created. Use this day to reflect on your blessings. If possible surround yourself with people you care about and share and celebrate each other. If not possible visit with loved ones in your head and your heart. My Mentor and Father -in-Law passed away last year on Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend. I still visit with him on a regular basis.

Our Cranberry Relish recipe for this issue came from Cooking Light Magazine and is a cross between relish and traditional  cranberry sauce. The spicy aroma will fill every room with the warmth of the holiday. Check out our Thanksgiving facts for more information on cranberries.

We hope to see many of you in the next two weeks and also extend our best wishes for a nice Thanksgiving.

Best Regards,

Richard Reinwald

While we all know the story of the first Thanksgiving with the Pilgrims in 1621 following are some facts that may be new to some.

  • George Washington was the first President to proclaim a national day of Thanksgiving in 1789
  • New York State made Thanksgiving an annual custom in 1817.
  • Abraham Lincoln issued his Thanksgiving proclamation and proposed the Last Thursday in November to be official Thanksgiving prior to this each President made a proclamation but the day could always change.
  • In 1941 Congress passed a resolution that the 4th Thursday in November will be the National day of Thanksgiving.
  • Minnesota is the top Turkey producing state.
  • Cranberries are 1 of only 3 native American fruits. Blueberries and Concord grapes are the others.
  • Back in 1900 Long Island was the nations top producer of cranberries. (Any one who has played golf at Swan Lake know where the production bogs were.)

10 Things to do as a family

This Autumn set aside some time to spend with your family. You don't have to coordinate an extravagant event to have fun. There are some really neat things you can do that don't require traveling too far and don't cost  too much.

  1. Take a walk on a starry night and watch for shooting stars. Come home and enjoy hot cocoa and cookies
  2. Library Trivia - Prepare a list of famous or not so famous people or places, Give everyone an hour in the library, winner picks a movie or other activity to do. Why not use some Huntington names in the mix?
  3. Rake the leaves as a family, jump in them before bagging, eat fresh apples with spice cookies.
  4. Take a stroll through Huntington or Northport. Only window shopping allowed. When everyone has a chill go to the pizza parlor with the ovens out front. The warmth and the smells will make a lasting memory.
  5. Have a family scavenger hunt. Include items and photos from grandparents or when kids were babies. End the day with a call or visit to Grandma. She'll enjoy your day too. pack a Holiday treat like stollen or fruit cake.
  6. Invite neighbors for a board game night or learn to play Pinochle. You'll be surprised how the kids can go "low tech", bring a tray of cookies and there will be no losers.
  7. Sunday Tea - Put out the good china and table cloth. Dress to impress and listen to classical music. Have everybody pick a topic to talk about. Reinwald's has a large variety of pastries to help start the tradition.
  8. Learn to whistle in an acorn Shell. Have a contest, who can collect the most acorns. Jelly donuts will be the perfect prize!
