Dear Friends and Colleagues,

No matter where you live, we hope you are managing the cold, snow, and ice this month. Why not use your snow days to catch up on some reading or take advantage of some of our February holiday specials!

And the winner is ....

Thanks to those who responded to our idiom contest last month.

The participants identified the following expressions as either opaque (requiring memorization since it cannot be visualized or inferred) or transparent (relatively easy to be discerned in context).

The variability of responses showed us how open to interpretation some of these idioms can be to both native and non-native speakers.

Below are the results with the percentage of agreement among respondents:

  1. Out on a limb - T 75%
  2. All thumbs - T 100%
  3. Kick the bucket - O 100%
  4. Back to square one - 50/50
  5. Go under the knife - T 100%
  6. Keep an eye on her - T 75%
  7. In your neck of the woods - O 100%
  8. Nip it in the bud - T 75%
  9. It's right under your nose - T 100%
  10. Wrap it up - T 100%

Our winners are Melissa Page Deutsch, of Norfolk, VA, Sharon Van Houte, of Elyria, OH, and Amelio Paulucci, of Webster, NY. The winners can purchase Medically Speaking Idioms at 50% off ($25).
