Convention Updates
We will be presenting "Read-Aloud Stories-A Practical Approach to Address Pronunciation, Intonation, Vocabulary, and Grammar" at the Maryland TESOL Fall Conference on Saturday, December 12 at Towson University. Thank you to the 172 people who participated in our online survey. We will be presenting the results at this conference. If you would like to receive the results, send us an e-mail at lkwilner@successfully-speaking.com. Thanks again to our wonderful colleagues who "answered the call!" ESL RULEs will also have an exhibit table, so please stop by and check out our new products.
We will also have an exhibit booth at the 2011 TESOL Convention in New Orleans (March 17-19) and we will be presenting at the conference. Again, let us know if you will be participating. As the conference approaches we will give you more details. |
Technology
We have just returned from the annual American Speech-Language and Hearing Convention in Philadelphia and attended many worthwhile sessions. There were several presentations on social media and technology. Although technology has numerous advantages for professionals, we would like to mention an important caveat. Don't allow the technology to overwhelm you or replace interpersonal communication. As we walked around the convention, everyone was wired to one gadget or another. People were tweeting about conference sessions, texting about dinner plans, emailing colleagues and family, and checking in on voicemail. The flurry of technology was pervasive! In one session, when the technology was not working optimally, the speaker never even considered speaking rather than using the recorded version that echoed!
Personal connections still matter and should not be lost! Everyone seems plugged into technology. Here are a few challenges to consider:
- Spend a portion of your day unplugged. Can you survive for 30 minutes without your Blackberry or smart phone? Does it need to go to the gym with you?
- Set boundaries and designate time to respond to your messages. Establish a "cut-off" time for checking and answering e-mails.
- Only answer your phone if you will be able to speak. If it is important, they will leave a voice mail or call back.
- Remember telephone etiquette. Hang up when you are in a store and ordering or checking out. And avoid using your phone in a restaurant.
- Watch the volume of your voice. Nobody on the bus, train, or waiting room needs to hear your conversation.
- When you are in the company of other people, talk to them!
