Rule of the Month: Articles
Articles are often the nemesis of second language learners. In RULES, we devote a chapter to the numerous rules that assist the learner in understanding the proper use of definite and indefinite articles as well as demonstrative pronouns.
The RULES Teacher's Edition includes quizzes of the rules, fill-in exercises, and activities for demonstrative pronouns that double as pronunciation activities for the "th" sound.
Some interesting rules are as follows:
Lakes do not take on articles, but rivers do. For example, "This summer we are going to Lake Champlain and will also go on a rafting trip down the Colorado River."
Singular mountain peaks do not take on articles, but mountain ranges do. For example,"This summer, I climbed Mt. Hood and hiked the Appalachian Mountains." |
