Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We hope that your spring has been busy and productive!

We enjoyed seeing our old friends, and making many new friends at the International 2010 TESOL Convention in Boston! (March 24-27). It was a very exciting conference, filled with lots of interesting presentations and thought-provoking discussions. If your schedule did not allow you to attend either of our two presentations, "English for Medical Professionals: Assessments and Activities," please contact us. We would be happy to send you our handouts. Thank you to all who attended our workshops! We look forward to next year's convention in New Orleans!

Rule of the Month: Y-Insertion

When the vowel sound /u/ is spelled with the letter "u," or the letters "ew," a "Y" or /j/ sound is often heard in the pronunciation. There are many exceptions to this rule, as well as regional variations.

We have found some patterns, not quite "rules". When the word ends in "-ular" (circular), "-late" (articulate), or "-tive" (executive), the "Y" is inserted. Can you find any other patterns? Email us and we will include them in our next newsletter. We are always seaching for new RULES!

We recommend that students make their own list of their own frequently used words, with a column for those spoken with a  y-insertion and those that aren't.

For example:
Y-insertion: manufacture, computer, regular, peculiar, few
No Y-insertion: solution, rumor, nuclear, conclude
