Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We hope 2010 is off to a great start. We wish you the very best for a healthy and prosperous year ahead.

Tips for Healthcare Professionals

Many of you are designing curriculums for internationally trained healthcare professionals, both in college settings and smaller training environments. We have found that in addition to teaching pronunciation for medical terminology and medically-oriented vocabulary, there is a need to address basic communication in the healthcare setting. The following are some communication repair strategies we have found to be particularly useful to include in training programs or classes.

  • Remain calm
  • Maintain eye contact
  • Repeat it one time
  • Speak loud enough
  • Rephrase your sentence
  • Explain it another way
  • Use visual cues, e.g., gestures, pointing
  • Spell the difficult word aloud
  • Write the difficult word
  • Emphasize the important word
Please read how these strategies impacted some of Lynda's students who took her course, Communication Skills for Allied Health Professionals, at Baltimore County Community College this fall.
