Thank you Blatt
It was the bottom of the ninth and the score was all tied up. Storm clouds were threatening and the biggest gig of my life teetered in the balance. My band, Finest Hour was set to play right before the last Rosenblatt Fireworks Show. We were told early that if the game ran long we would get snubbed to make sure the fireworks got a chance to start on time. That's exactly what happened last year to a band because of rain delays. They weren't kidding. We were all set up on a stage built in the outfield bleachers and had sound checked earlier in the day and it sounded big, great. We were so excited. Between the tied game and the storm looming over head, our hopes were slowly crumbling before eyes. Then, as if scripted in Hollywood, in the bottom of the 9th, the Royals smack a game winning walk off Home Run. Game over. We take to the stage and wait for our intro from Mike Kelly of the OWH. I'm staring at the blackest cloud of the day rolling in over head and just hoping to get a song in before rain. Mike gives our intro to the 3rd largest crowd for a Triple A ball game in history (over 23,000) and as we rip into our set the sky miraculously clears and the rest,... is history. It's hard to imagine the Rosenblatt Stadium being erased from existence after this season. I can't help waxing nostalgic. I lived the first 2 years of my life practically in the shadow of the Blatt on south 17th St. My Dad grew up even closer and watched it built in '47-48. I've seen countless games and a few concerts there. Now I've had the distinct honor to have played there. The song from "A League of Their Own" seems to have been written for the Rosenblatt. But alas...
"This used to be my playground (used to be)
This used to be our pride and joy
This used to be the place we ran to
That no one in the world could dare destroy"

Thanks for the memories Blatt. Thomas Sena
