Veterans making the April Honor Flight were joined by Congressman Joe Wilson (left) at the WWII memorial

Following the success of an Honor Flight in April, South Carolina's electric cooperatives are again sponsoring a trip for World War II veterans to Washington D.C.

S.C. co-ops underwrote a flight on April 11 and opened the flight to members who were WWII vets. More than 380 veterans have applied to go on the trip. Seeing the demand and experiencing the success of that April trip, the co-ops decided to fund a second flight, set for September 26. Once again, veterans and their guardians will take a chartered flight to visit the World War II memorial and other sites in the nation's capital.

Newberry's Mid-Carolina Industrial Park gets a boost from loan
An industrial park served by Newberry Electric Cooperative will get a $2 million loan to attract new industry.

The loan will enable Newberry County to build an industrial shell building in the Mid-Carolina Commerce Park.

Total cost to construct the 50,000-to-100,000 square foot building is $2.95 million. Newberry County is lending $950,000, and Santee Cooper will lend the rest. "Newberry County is aggressively seeking new industry, and this industrial building will be an important economic development tool that will ultimately provide new jobs for South Carolinians. It is good for Newberry County, it is good for Newberry Electric Cooperative and it is good for the entire state," said R.M. Singletary, executive vice president of corporate services for Santee Cooper.

Call for energy, climate questions in presidential debates

Some are calling for more debate over energy and climate issues in the presidential campaign

Can conservationists bring climate and energy issues to the forefront of the presidential campaign? The League of Conservation Voters this week launched a petition to get a climate question on the table at the first presidential debate October 3. Mitt Romney unveiled his energy plan this week, which included a proposal to enable the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to "approve new designs and to license approved reactor designs on approved sites within two years." Romney's platform also calls for stripping the Environmental Protection Agency of authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions.

A spokesman for President Obama's reelection campaign suggested to The Hill Thursday that climate change is unlikely to be a key issue in the 2012 election. Obama, campaigning in recent months, has touted his green energy initiatives but avoided addressing global warming. Environmental advocates, including former Vice President Al Gore, have expressed disappointment in the small role that climate change is playing in this election.

Ronald Floyd points to the area where he saw a fire while delivering mail
Ronald Floyd, a trustee with
Horry Electric Cooperative and letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service, has been named the 2012 Hero of the Year by the National Rural Letter Carrier Association.

In February of 2011, he noticed a fire at the home of one of his customers. He grabbed a garden hose to extinguish the flames while she called for help. After he finished delivering mail for the day, he went back to check on her and the scene of the fire, only to find it had flared up again. He did the same thing as before and prevented it from spreading further.

"I'm thankful for this honor," said Floyd, "there are hundreds of other Postal employees that helped their customers who are equally deserving. At some point in everyone's life, they unexpectedly become part of another person's emergency. I'm thankful that I was put in the circumstance where I could be of help when that time came. In my way of thinking, I only did what anyone else would've done for a neighbor in need."

Floyd is the first U.S. Postal Service employee from S.C. to receive the prestigious award.
