Armed robbery, power theft hit co-ops
meterTwo cooperatives summoned police this week in response to thefts, including one armed robbery. Berkeley Electric's Awendaw office was robbed Wednesday afternoon around 3:15. Two men, both armed with a gun and wearing gloves and a mask, took money. No one was hurt.

Broad River Electric called Spartanburg County deputies when they found that a man had tampered with his meter box to restore power. The co-op had disconnected the power to the home in Inman last week because of unpaid electric bills. The homeowner said he knew it was wrong but high temperatures had motivated him to restore power to his home, occupied by six people  Josh Crotzer, member services coordinator, says Broad River is seeing an increase in meter tampering and power theft. The co-op offers extensions to help members under financial stress. "We don't want to turn anybody's power off, and we'll do what we can to help them out," Crotzer told a WYFF-TV reporter. "We don't want any fatalities or to put anybody's health at risk.

New Touchstone Energy TV ads coming this fall
Touchstone Energy TV
A scene from the new Touchstone Energy television campaign.
Five new television commercials from Touchstone Energy Cooperatives will hit the airwaves this fall in South Carolina. Co-op marketing staffs were in Charleston this week to preview the ads, just one of many topics covered during the quarterly gathering hosted by Statewide and Central Electric Power Cooperative.

The new commercials expand on the "Together We Save" campaign, which promotes small changes that members can make to save energy. In one ad, a family learns how saving energy can help them save for a vacation. In another, a small girl learns a lesson in energy efficiency from her mom. Accompanying print and radio ads are also available for local co-op use. The new ads will begin appearing in television markets statewide on August 29.

Wasson shares Alabama's thanks at Laurens meeting
David Wasson
At the annual meeting, CEO David Wasson read a letter from Alabama thanking Laurens crews for their work to restore power.

Laurens Electric Cooperative registered 2,710 member-owners in attendance June 4 at the 2011 Annual Meeting. Incumbents Mitch Powers, Marcus Cook and Charles Adair were re-elected to the board.

In his remarks, President and CEO J. David Wasson Jr. shared a letter from Mrs. Reed of Pisgah, Ala. She praised the Laurens crews who volunteered to help restore power after devastating tornados struck in late April for their "hard work, support, kind words and dedication." She noted, "Without your help we could easily have been without power for longer than nine days! Our small town had 97 homes damaged beyond repair and 30 completely destroyed. Sadly, three people were killed. We have a long road of recovery but our sweet home Alabama will bounce back. ... We will be forever thankful!"

"There's a method to corralling the madness," says South Carolina co-ops' youth tour director Van O'Cain, as he smiles and refers to the six tee shirts. The shirts, each a different color, are the latest way O'Cain will keep track of 47 high school students during six days in the nation's capital. The 2011 Washington Youth Tour departs from Charleston's airport tomorrow. Seven chaperones and students sponsored by all 20 South Carolina electric cooperatives will follow a packed schedule of touring and visiting with most of the state's congressional delegation.
