Greetings!

asters monarch
The already brilliant foliage takes my breath away and as always I am convinced this is the very best year ever.  Today I passed a burst of deep purple field aster with several monarchs sipping nectar.

Delicious October brings a rich harvest of classes and events at the YOGA PLACE.  We invite you to dive in and taste the bounty of this month as we offer you the deep wisdom and experience of our teachers in various forms which are detailed below.                                                             miraculous monarch

Plus a brief review of the neurohematologic reverb of OM

We love you so much and so enjoy your presence in our classes.....it is our greatest gift to be able to pass on that which we have received.  Thank you.

Yoga Place proceeds from the OCT weekend workshops will go to help the GREATER BENNINGTON INTERFAITH COUNCIL which operates a Soup Kitchen, a Free Medical Clinic 2 days/week and is still assisting those in need after Hurricane Irene flooding.
The Yoga Place and its teachers are supportive of and dependent on the liveliness of our community.
Our hearts go out to all the flood victims including ourselves.  And as we all heal from the shock and trauma of destruction and change, may we always know enough to turn to each other in love.

      To you, we bow deeply.

Jane and the Yoga Place Teachers

SOUNDING OM
meditating Burmese monk
You may have noticed the odd symbols in our logo.  The one on the upper right is the OM symbol, the Sanskrit word or OM, said to be the root sound of all sounds.  Often at the beginning of a yoga class, the teacher will guide you in sounding or listening to the sound of OM.

From the International Journal of Yoga

Year : 2011  |  Volume : 4  |  Issue : 1  |  Page : 3-6

comes this wonderful study validating what our bodies already know.

To summarize:  your nervous and blood systems relax during the chanting of OM.  This has implications for use in depression and other disorders such as epilepsy.  Stay tuned.

Entitled:  Neurohemodynamic correlates of 'OM' chanting: A pilot functional magnetic resonance imaging study
Authors:  Bangalore+G+Kalyani,  Ganesan Venkatasubramanian
Background: A sensation of vibration is experienced during audible 'OM' chanting. This has the potential for vagus nerve stimulation through its auricular branches and the effects on the brain thereof. The neurohemodynamic correlates of 'OM' chanting are yet to be explored. Materials and Methods: Using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), the neurohemodynamic correlates of audible 'OM' chanting were examined in right-handed healthy volunteers (n=12; nine men). The 'OM' chanting condition was compared with pronunciation of "ssss" as well as a rest state. fMRI analysis was done using Statistical Parametric Mapping 5 (SPM5). Results: In this study, significant deactivation was observed bilaterally during 'OM' chanting in comparison to the resting brain state in bilateral orbitofrontal, anterior cingulate, parahippocampal gyri, thalami and hippocampi. The right amygdala too demonstrated significant deactivation. No significant activation was observed during 'OM' chanting. In contrast, neither activation nor deactivation occurred in these brain regions during the comparative task - namely the 'ssss' pronunciation condition.
Conclusion: The
neurohemodynamic correlates of 'OM' chanting indicate limbic deactivation. As similar observations have been recorded with vagus nerve stimulation treatment used in depression and epilepsy, the study findings argue for a potential role of this 'OM' chanting in clinical practice.

Next month:  Increased Hatha yoga (physical yoga) experience predicts lower body mass index and reduced medication use in women over 45 years.  (of course!)
