Ethical Precepts
| |
Do you have to be a buddha before you start yoga? The Yamas and Niyamas What are they and why care? Yama and Niyama are the first 2 limbs of yoga, ethical precepts set forth in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. They are derived from the yogic teachings which began 5000 years ago. Do not stop reading here. They invite us to honor our deepest intentions, the intention of the heart. They are the foundation of our practice without which no spiritual progress through the path of yoga can be made. Although most come to yoga now as a physical exercise, they keep coming back because "savasana" or the deep rest at the end of each class is profoundly refreshing and soothing. Yamas These are suggestions or directions to help each one of us build our relationship with the world: It should be self evident that having a good relationship with the world and with other people is imperative. The Yamas are imperatives that point us toward good heartedness to ourselves as well as to others. Niyamas These are the general actions that are necessary if we truly want to achieve a condition of health and deep balance within. They address our personal intimate relationship with ourself. Next month, we will review what they actually are. Later in the year we will offer a study course. See Jan/Feb 2012 Newsletter.

The Second Half of Life
| Entering the Wisdom Gates
with Carol Steinmetz, RN, RYT The second half of life has infinitel potential. New, exciting doors open daily. Angeles Arrien's book will provide the guideposts for this yogic exploration of how to work with the wisdom so richly earned by elders. Many older cultures have passages of initiation, tools for shifting perspectives, which help people to map the new landscapes arising during the second half of life. Arrien defines eight wisdom gates through which we must pass in order to develop into wise elders. Each gate has a task, a challenge, a gift, a reflection and a practice.
Class size will be limited to 15 to facilitate learning. We will study one gate per month leaving room to absorb and integrate new learning. Using the powerful grounding practice of yoga, we will enter the gates with poetry, images and symbolic language as our guides. Join us. Introductory session Sept 10 at 1030AM. Please sign up in advance as space is limited. Investment: $150 (arrangements may be made for paying in installments). Class will meet once a month for 8 months on the 2nd Saturday. A little about Carol's additional work. "Working individually with clients following accidents or illnesses is challenging and rewarding work. Designing private classes and exercise regimes for those in new situations helps integrate body, mind and spirit following major trauma or illness. My background in nursing and knowledge of yoga combined with client motivation work to hasten recovery times. " It is notable also that Carol made a decision quite a few years ago to leave a corporate environment where she was director of nursing education to follow her passions of yoga, meditation and integrative bodywork. |
The Yoga Place and its teachers are dedicated to providing Yoga and Pilates for the health and wellness of all. We find that peace inside spreads around and creates peace outside.
Yoga and Pilates are vigorous, challenging practices that open new doors to health, well-being and joy. We are a friendly, community studio working with the individual situations of anyone who comes across our path. We keep it simple, providing only water, Battenkill Brittle and yoga mats for sale.
Our teachers are all certified professionals. Our teaching staff is: Jane Schaeffer, MA, RYT_500, teacher/owner/manager. Donna Menneto, CPI. Donna Myers, MA in progress, RYT and Thai Massage Therapy. Carol Steinmetz, RN, RYT. Ali Wassick, RYT, Thai Massage Therapy. Bethany Boulger, CMT, RYT, co-owner Green Mountain Oasis. Tracey Forest, RYT, college professor, co-founder Spirit Hollow. Ari Gradus, RYT, artist. We want to take the space here to bow in deepest gratitude to the many people "behind the scenes" who keep our studio supplied with water, Karin; sparkling clean, Cindy; neat and tidy, Heidi; spreading the word: Linda and Heidi and many others. We are especially grateful this month to our landlords: Chris and Nancy Woltman, owner of Panache, for solving our air conditioning problem in this very hot summer. The Yoga Place students also want to acknowledge the many generous contributions to the Alice McGovern Memorial Scholarship Fund. THANK YOU ALL. This is a wonderful tribute to Alice and something that she, as an health educator, would fully support. These funds enable us to offer subsidies to students who are in need. As you know, we are sincerely interested in people being able to access yoga and never want funding to be an impediment to someone doing yoga. We love you. Keep coming. Jane
