Greetings!
Warrior II or Virabadrasana 2 (pictured above)is a powerful posture drawing often long forgotten energies into our bodies. Just by taking this posture, we begin to redefine who and what we are and open into subtle transformation. The Sanskrit word "asana" commonly translates in English as "yoga pose" or "yoga posture". "Yoga" is said to mean the "yoking" together of body, mind and spirit. Yoga pertains to coming into the present moment and simply realizing what is actually so for us, at all levels: physical, emotional, intellectual, energetic and spiritual. Asana in Sanskrit translates as "a" - awakening to, "sa" - moving towards and liberating, "na" - eternal cosmic vibration. So yoga asana literally means to join together and connect to our awakening, to a movement towards our liberation or our eternal cosmic vibration. In this way each asana or yoga posture invites us to be fully in all the postures we take in our lives, to be awake and to find the spirit within each precious moment that we are alive!
Thus the first sutra of Patanjali is simply "Now yoga".
Imagine if we step off the yoga mat and into our lives with this full awareness. It is a wonderful practice. We can begin it now.
As Donna Myers did recently when she sponsored a fundraiser for her dear friend Dana who is now receiving the chemotherapy she so desperately needs.

Notes about Alice
|
Many many of you have asked after Alice McGovern, a senior yoga teacher and mentor to us. Alice is recuperating well and hopes to be home by the end of the week. She was able to receive a full hip replacement and is already walking up and down the halls!
Alice has been a dedicated yogini for over 30 years, opening her heart and her practice, bringing yoga to any and all through programs at the hospital, at the Bikram studio, at her house and elsewhere. Yoga with Alice definitely saved my life. I had taken yoga as a young mom but lost touch with it over the years. I found myself in a full time doctoral program, working two jobs with a daughter about to graduate from high school. I was literally sleeping 2-4 hours/night and actually reading while I drove to work. In short I was "losing the plot" entirely. I happened to fall into a yoga class that Alice was teaching at the hospital. I got it. For the first time in years, I relaxed. I began to make it a priority to get to that yoga class and slowly my self and my life began to unwind and move in a more healthy direction. Eventually Alice and I began to teach together and, with Mimi Francis, successfully brought the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Relaxation Class to this area. I know I am not the only one who feels gratitude and love for Alice. Thank you Alice and we all wish you a strong, speedy and joyful recovery. We bow deeply to you. Namaste.

Winter Warming Soup
| Gotta eat and gotta cook This sweet, clean soup is lovely, refreshing and healing From The Yoga Cookbook: Vegetarian Food for the Body and Mind (I added the ginger, turmeric and garlic/onions) 3 T. oil some fresh ginger, peeled, chopped fresh turmeric, chopped (if you have it) some garlic and onion, peel and chopped 4 stick celery, finely chopped 4 carrot, chopped into bite size cubes 1 small rutabaga, bite size cubes 2 Qts boiling water (can use vegetable broth also) 2 bay leaves 1/2 cup hulled barley ( I cooked this separately) 1 t. ground cumin 1 t. ground coriander Salt and pepper to taste 1 T. chopped fresh cilantro or parsley Heat oil in large pan. Add garlic, ginger, onion and celery and saute for 2 minutes. Add carrots and rutabaga and continue cooking for 5 minutes longer. Add water and bay leaves, barley, and ground cumin and coriander. Simmer for 30 minutes, until vegetables and barley are soft. Remove half the soup (if you wish - i loved it just simple) and puree it in a food processor or blender until smooth. Return to pan and season with salt and pepper. Reheat and serve with cilantro or parsley garnish.
