Beginner Yoga Class
Photos by yogi Sean McEntee
Deep bow to all the students who allowed us to photograph classes and to Sean:  Thank you.
If you've been anxious about attending a yoga class because you're afraid you won't be able to bend into the shape of a pretzel, never fear!  Yoga is a gentle, slow-moving exercise that helps to create awareness necessary to be in tune with your body.  All that matters is that you do your personal best (or not even).  If you cannot touch your knees at first, no problem:  Postures can be modified just for you.

Yoga is helpful in so many ways:  the breathing techniques alone can enhance athletic performance or stop an asthma attack.  Yoga helps with posture, lifestyle management, stress, overeating, digestion, stiff muscles and joints.  Yoga is a preventive medicine and is reimbursed by some insurances.
Yoga leads to increased flexibility, profound relaxation, clarity of thought, improved muscle tone and strength as well as improved balance, coordination, concentration and oxygen intake.
It can also help manage anxiety, arthritis, asthma, back pain, blood pressure, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic fatigue, depression, diabetes, heart disease, menopausal symptoms, migraines, multiple sclerosis and osteoporosis.  And those are only the things they've done research on.
Below you will find some pictures from a beginner yoga class.

Greetings!

Today is rain, yesterday was blissful sun and billowing breeze, fall color is everywhere, life in all its manifestations is good as long as we remain teachable.  Better to hold an attitude of curiosity, of gratitude than one of fear and cynicism.  Whatever we think multiplies so if we spend time on dour thoughts, dourness multiplies.  If we spend time on grateful thoughts, serenity multiplies. People who do yoga and who meditate are shown to have strong reactions to events but they return to baseline normal faster than others.  So it is not that we do not get mad or hurt or angry but that we can often find calm at the center which then allows us to take effective action.  Think about it.
In this newsletter you will find THE SCHEDULE which remains much the same, some pictures from Newfoundland/Labrador trip this summer, some pictures of a Very Beginner Yoga Class, some new offerings and a story about 100 year old yogi.
Right now I am preparing for a three week trip to Bali in November for training and delight.  Alice, Donna and Ali will be covering my various classes while I am away and Donna Myers will be covering any studio needs.  Please know that I am deeply grateful to each of them for their support and love and to you all for your continuing support and for practicing yoga.
         Namaste

NEWFOUNDLAND
This past summer, Michael and I took an extended motorcycle tour of Newfoundland and then because we could, Labrador.  It was fascinating to learn the history of the first settlers of this continent, the Vikings in the Northern-most tip of Newfoundland and to learn of the ongoing seafaring story of early to modern day Newfoundland.
The extraordinary vastness of the sea and land was deeply touching.   The great space of the New Found Land opening us to the spaciousness new found land within.

TRUE TITAN OF YOGA
vira 2Swami Buaji
(from www.care2.com/greenliving/the-tru-titan-of-yoga.html via Linda Putney)
"Love all unconditionally without any reservation, including yourself.  Begin the day with love, spend the day with love, fill the day with love, and end the day with love, that is the way to God."
Swami Buaji was the 16th child of his parents.  Because he was born disabled, it was predicted the he would die early. He began studying yoga with a sadhu (holy man) as a child and ultimately lived to be 120 years old.  He was the beloved although strict teacher of many yoga students in India and the US.
recipe

Simple fast delicious salad

1 vidalia or sweet onion, sliced into half moons
1 Haas Avocado, sliced into half moons
2 jalapeno peppers, sliced across-wise
3 Tablespoons lime juice
2 T. olive oil
1/2 Kosher salt

Mix lime juice, olive oil and salt w. whisk.  Mix together gently with vegetables.  Let sit 5 minutes.  Eat.  Yum.
The Yoga Place is a serene environment devoted to practices that lead to inner peace and calm, to deep relaxation.  We believe that, after love, relaxation is the answer.  The practice of yoga, of pilates, of meditation will lead to an increased sense of well-being and the ability to relax into life, sorrows and joys and just ordinary days.   People often come to yoga with limited goals and leave with a sense of having touched the infinite.
Our students are our biggest blessings.

Sincerely,

Jane Schaeffer and the teachers at
