Week 43: 5 Questions to Finish the Year Strong
"A dream comes through much activity, but a fool is known by his many words." - Ecclesiastes 5:3 Dear Friend,
There are just two months left in the year. Is there anything you hoped to accomplish earlier this year that's still on the backburner? This week, I want to remind you of your own dream. It might be a very simple one: "I want to live and work in a clutter-free environment" or "I want to start walking 10 miles a week." Or it might be major one: "I want to change careers" or "I want to start a family." What goal is it time for you to reclaim? Rather than giving up or beating yourself up because you haven't made the progress you hoped for, get focused. One of the keys to setting and reaching goals is to expect to hit bumps in the road. Expect to run out of steam sometimes. Then recharge and keep on moving forward. The year is coming to a close, but it's not over yet. Muster the energy to finish strong. Coach yourself with these questions: 1. What one goal would be most meaningful for me between now and the end of the year? We often choose goals without prioritizing which one is most important. With just two months in the year, choose one thing that would really mean something to you. 2. Why is this goal so meaningful to me? When you know why you are doing something, you understand the purpose in it. Purpose ignites passion. And passion fuels perseverance. 3. What specific steps will I take towards this goal starting this week? Take your goal from the abstract to the specific. Identify specific actions that will move your forward. For example, a phone call that needs to be made, an activity you need to engage in, a class you need to sign up for, or an email that will get the ball rolling. Each time you take a step, ask, "What's the next step?" Then take it. Before you know it, you'll arrive at your destination. 4. Who will I ask to check in with me about my progress and hold me accountable? Research shows that you are far more likely to reach your goal if you tell someone you've set it. Don't keep your goals to yourself so you can let yourself off the hook later! Share your goals with one or more supportive people and tell them to ask you regularly how you are coming along. 5. How will I celebrate my accomplishment? Create something to look forward to. Celebrate your milestone when you reach it. My challenge to you this week: Dust off a goal that has gotten buried under the busyness of life. Coaching question: When December 31st comes, how will you know you have accomplished your goal? Paint picture of what it will look like to reach this goal. Doing so will allow you to measure your progress and know when you have reached the goal.
Warm wishes,
