Georgia Work Ready Certification Celebration

Camden County Chamber of Commerce led the way for Camden County to earn the Work Ready Certification designation back in February 2010.  On July 14th we were finally able to officially celebrate our community's accomplishments.  Camden County was the 36th out of 50 counties to be designated Certified Work Ready.   "Becoming a Work Ready Certified Community has allowed us the opportunity to promote our County to state economic developers and industries, showing we have a workforce that will meet any standard," said Christine Daniel, president Camden County Chamber of Commerce.

Rachel Baldwin, the committee chair for the Chamber's Workforce Development Committee, led the way and began the initial outreach to the Camden County High School seniors.  "We saw this as a method of increasing their post-graduation job opportunities and broadening their skill sets," said Rachel Baldwin. "Since adopting Work Ready the CCHS has also increased their graduation rate from 75 to 82.6 percent," stated Baldwin.

The committee also introduced the Work Ready initiative to businesses, two of which included Bayer Crop Science and Trident Refit Facility, Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay.  Both businesses require all their applicants to be a Work Ready Certificate holder. "We hope that business leaders and the community residents become more familiar with Work Ready and will also incorporate the program into their hiring process, because it enables employers to hire the right applicants to fit the position which reduces turnover and improves retention," stated Daniel.

Camden County lies between three major seaports, two to the north and one in Florida to the south.  "With our quality of life, schools, and now proof that our workforce meets any skill standard required, we look forward to welcoming new businesses to our Work Ready Community," said Daniel.

Hire Work Ready

Hire Work Ready
Overview

To help Georgia small businesses defray the cost of on-the-job training, the Governor's Office of Workforce Development (GOWD) and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce launched a new outreach program called Hire Work Ready. Utilizing American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) support, the program is designed to provide funding to small businesses - those employing 50 or fewer - that hire Work Ready Certified people to assist with costs associated with hiring and training of new workers.
Benefits of Hire Work Ready include:

 Supporting Georgia's small businesses by defraying hiring and training costs
 Creating demand among job seekers for earning a Work Ready Certificate
 Showcasing the benefits of hiring Work ReadyCertified
 e
mployees

Operations

Small businesses can apply for Hire Work Ready funding at the Georgia Work Ready Web site
(
www.gaworkready.org). Approved business owners will be provided with information on using
Georgia Work Ready in their hiring process and be given access to an exclusive database of Work R
eady Certified job seekers.

Small businesses will be eligible to save $250 for each certified Work Ready individual hired (the businesses can save up to $1,250).
GOWD estimates Hire Work Ready will encourage the hiring of 1,000 Work Ready Certified workers by as many as 400 firms.

Leadership Camden Alumni Enjoys "Success Series"

The 3rd "Success Series" sponsored by the Leadership Camden Alumni was held on July 17th at Dr. Fareed and Jayne Kadum's home on St. Simons Island. Many thanks to the Kadum's for opening their home to the group and making each of us feel as if we were family.  Their hospitality was very much appreciated.  Fareed & Jayne talked about their life together, their family and their successes.  The love of family and each other was inspiring and both have accomplished so much and have given even more to the communities in which they live. We are lucky to have you both in our community and making a difference in the lives of others.  Thank you for your hospitality.
