Your Chamber NewsMay 2010
Greetings!

Congratulations to Simply Architectural Glass, Inc. our May Chick-fil-A Business of the Month!

As always, before you commit to pay money to any advertiser, please check to be sure they are truly working with someone in Camden County.  Many of these advertisers are telling you they are working with the Chamber, the School System, the Athletic Program, etc. If we do not send you a letter stating we are working with a specific advertiser, chances are we aren't.

Please join us for a presentation on a trip to Tuscany on Wednesday, May 26th at 6:30 pm in the Chamber Conference Room.  Jack Brinson from Collette Vacations will present Tuscany and answer any questions you may have.

We hope all Mother's had a wonderful Mother's Day!

Sincerely,
Chris, Christi & Julie

Chamber's Annual Washington Fly-In a Great Success

The Chamber's 15th Annual Washington Fly-In held on April 21st - 23rd was fast paced and full of relevant and important information for our community. Each year the Chamber coordinates the County & City Governments, School Board, Joint Development Authority, The Camden Partnership, Navy League, Healthcare System, and serval businesses within Camden to better our community.

There are always many issues impacting Camden and it would be virtually impossible to present all of them to our elected officials and others we visit. In an effort to have an organized and succinct package we break our issues into three main areas to include: Military, Education and Economic Recovery (Quality of Life).

This year we had 34 issue papers, eleven of which were Military, two Education, fifteen Economic Recovery and six Additional Supporting Information. View papers. The three days were fast paced with an itinerary that was packed full of visits.  The visits included a lunch meeting with Congressman Jack Kingston (sponsored by Georgia Power and Gilbert, Harrell, Sumerford and Martin P.C.), a 45 minute meeting with Senators Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson completing the day with a group dinner for the participants.  This dinner is always an outstanding way to really get to know the members of our community and build excellent working relationships and lasting friendships.

Day two began with a meeting with RADM Karl Schultz from the United States Coast Guard and his leadership team. A brief tour of the National Navy League and a brief presentation from the leadership of the Sea Cadet program, followed by a meeting with the Melissa Kuckro Senior Legislative Affairs Specialist from the National Park Service.  The evening ended with a reception/dinner (sponsored by Brenau University and Southeast Georgia Health System) for Navy and Coast Guard Leadership and our elected officials staff.  There was a great deal of discussion taking place about our issues as well as forming better working relationships with those working in Washington.

Day three, our final day in DC began very early at the Pentagon.  The leadership we visited was quite impressive and the presentations we received were not only informative, but enlightening to all in attendance.  Those briefing our group were: Mr. Roger Natsuhara, Assistant Secretary of Navy (Installations & Environment), Jim Howard, Deputy Director Strategic Systems Programs, BG Richard Simcock, II, LA to the Commandant United States Marine Corp Office of Legislative Affairs, Rear Admiral Richard Breckenridge, Director of Submarine Warfare, N87B followed by a tour of the Pentagon and the 9/11 Memorial Chapel and Garden. The final meeting for the day was a visit to the US Chamber of Commerce where we discussed everything from American Free Enterprise and Healthcare Reform to Trade.

Where do we go from here?  "In an effort to keep Camden County on the minds of our elected officials in DC the Chamber will hold a Briefing Breakfast for our County Commissioners, Kingsland, St. Marys & Woodbine City Councils, School Board Members and our Military Leadership on Thursday, May 20th at 8 am at the Camden County Annex in Kingsland," said Christine Daniel.  "This is the first of the quarterly briefs to our county, cities and military leadership on the issues presented in DC."  Those that presented in DC will give the presentation made in DC and we hope to provide feedback received from our elected officials since our return.
