Ask PCA: What Can I Do About Coach Benching My Child? |
As usual, many of you came through with awesome answers to our last "Ask PCA" question about dads coaching their own kids. We had a record response on the Ask PCA blog, and we hope you will continue sharing your wisdom with the coaches and parents who benefit from reading it.
Our next question concerns the always-touchy topic of playing time. Please read below and then click through to the blog to comment.
"My question is, can a coach bench a player for the season for missing a practice? My son, age 13, has played and won 5 championships and has been a starter for 5 years. Coach voted him MVP last season, and my son was a big factor in his first year of success as a coach. The first game this season his coach benched him.
"The past two games, my son has played two innings and didn't come to bat for the whole game. In the past, he always played 2nd base and has hit lead off. This year, the coach yells at my son, and when my son does make a play, the coach says nothing but 'Get to the bench.' I and others don't understand. We have yet to win a game. I'm thinking of withdrawing my son. First, I'd like to know if I am overreacting." |

Youth Sports Spotlight: Your Thoughts About a Coaching Quandary |
|
PCA's Youth Sports Spotlight blog seeks your opinions on an interesting club soccer coaching decision at the U-12 and U-13 levels. A coach essentially ordered his U-12 team to miss shootout kicks against a U-13 team from the same club, so that the U-13 team could advance in a tournament, and the U-12 players would be protected from a repeat of the previous year's tournament losses.

PCA Bookshelf: Get Your Game Face On by Kathy Toon |
PCA is offering a limited-time opportunity to download for free a new book, Get Your Game Face On, by Kathy Toon, a long-time PCA Trainer and former PCA Product Development Manager. Get Your Game Face On incorporates many PCA techniques, such as using a Mistake Ritual to help athletes bounce back from mistakes.
In true PCA fashion, Game Face knits together life lessons and sports. For example, while the book prescribes specific mental steps to take during competition, it also explores how daily life away from sports contributes to athletic performance.
