Good Coaching Case Study #8: "Trophy Time"

Thanks to all of you who responded to our November "Good Coaching Case Study" titled The Ringers. Too many of you have experienced this form of cheating, but your comments contained level-headed responses to such a frustrating situation. To read all the comments, click here.

Now, consider our next Case Study:

Trophy Time

The league your 10-year-old plays in does not award participation trophies, but some team's coaches buy trophies and distribute them to their players. Your child is not on one of those teams.
  • What, if anything, do you say to your child's coaches?
  • How, if at all, do you approach the subject with league administrators?
  • How do you address the situation with your child?

You can "converse" about your answers at the Case Studies blog and by printing out this Case Study for discussion at youth sports events and organizational meetings.

As always, thanks to our co-conveners who distribute Case Studies through their websites, e-mail newsletters and publications, making this a true National Conversation on Coaching:

Jim Thompson's Responsible Sports Blog on Pete Newell
This week's passing of legendary college basketball coach Pete Newell served as a stark reminder to enjoy coaching, says PCA Founder and Executive Director Jim Thompson in his blog for the Liberty Mutual Responsible Sports program.

Coaching Tip: Get to Know Opposing Coaches Before the Game
A great way to ensure a positive environment for your youth or high school athletes is to get to know opposing coaches. It's easy to get caught up in pre-game preparation and to not make time to introduce yourself to opposing coaches, but this is a great opportunity lost.

By shaking hands and talking with opposing coaches, you are actively modeling Honoring the Game for your players and their parents, and it sets a strong, positive tone for the competition. Double-Goal Coaches know the importance of establishing a working relationship with their opposing coaches.

Click here to learn why and how that is done.
