Food For Thought

Here are three key things to know about fundraising:

1. People give when they are asked, and rarely give when they are not. Even when people are asked, they don't always give. So, you need to ask for more gifts than the number you need to bring in, and you need to be comfortable with people saying "No."

2. Donors are not ATMs. You need to thank them and keep them posted on what your organization is doing with their money if you want them to give more than once.

3. You can't raise all the money your group needs by yourself. Spend some time building a team of people to help you.

Conversation with the Funder
California Community Foundation

Thursday, July 16

11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The California Community Foundation's mission is to strengthen Los Angeles communities through effective philanthropy and civic engagement and it envisions a Los Angeles County made up of safe, thriving and diverse communities.

In 2008, the foundation awarded $220 million in grants to nonprofit organizations in Los Angeles County, across the country and worldwide.  Of this amount, nearly 70% were donor advised grants (not open to requests for funding). Competitive grants in the areas of the arts, education, health care, human development, and neighborhood vitalization represented 10.6% of this $220 million amount, with the remainder awarded through scholarships, supporting organizations, and special initiatives.

Program Officer Tamu Jones will provide an overview of the California Community Foundation's goals, programs, and funding guidelines, as well as answer questions not addressed by the California Community Foundation's website.

Sliding Scale Fee: $15 / $25 / $30 / $40
