37th Annual Gathering recognizes Betsy Johnson
Awards honor commitment to community gardening in Boston!
The Boston Natural Areas Network, with the help of Mayor Thomas M. Menino, presented the 10th annual Community Garden Awards at the recent 37th Gardeners Gathering held Saturday, March 31, at Northeastern University.
A special Hall of Fame award was given to Betsy Johnson who is one of the founders and president of the South End Lower Roxbury Open Space Land Trust. Johnson is nationally recognized for her advocacy on behalf of community gardens. She also founded Garden Futures which created Boston's Master Urban Gardener volunteer and mentoring program.
The Gardeners Gathering is presented annually by Boston Natural Areas Network, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing together local residents, partner organizations, public officials and foundations to preserve, expand and enhance urban open space, including community gardens, greenways and urban wilds. 2012 Give the Healthy Choice a Voice Contest:
Deadline Extended to Friday, May 11 at 5:00pm
 When was the last time YOU saw a commercial or heard a jingle promoting fresh fruits and vegetables? Help the BPS Farm to School Initiative give the healthy choice a voice by entering this year's contest!
It's not to late to enter! Submit your best 30-90 second commercials, songs/jingles, or public service announcements that promote the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables and healthy food choices in general.
All BPS students are welcome to participate! Click here for contest rules, guidelines and entry form.
Prizes will be presented to the top three video submissions and the top three audio submissions at an award ceremony in early June!

Copley Square Farmers' Market Grand Opening on Tuesday May 15th
Farmers Market season is fast approaching! Get yourself ready for the opening day of the Copley Square Farmers Market on Tuesday, May 15th. The Market will run every Tuesday and Friday from 11am to 6pm and will feature all of your favorite returning farmers including Atlas Farm, Cook's Farm, MacArthur Farm, Crystal Brook Farm, Hamilton Orchards, Silverbrook Farm, The
Herb Lyceum,Stillman's Farm, Stow Greenhouses, Dick's Market Garden and Siena Farm not to mention our new friends: Foppema Farm, Heirloom Harvest, Hickory Nut Farm, and Grass Roots Farm! The Copley Square Farmers Market is also introducing a gluten free bakery to supplement our terrific returning bread and pastry bakeries, cheese, hummus and other exciting specialty foods.
For students looking for internships or those just interested in getting involved in the local food movement, Mass Farmers Markets is offering various market internships and volunteer opportunities in areas such as marketing and low-income shopper outreach. Allandale Woods Urban Wild Urban Wild located within West Roxbury/Jamaica Plain/Roslindale to host free event
On Saturday, April 21, 2012, between 10:00 a.m-1:00 p.m. please join Boston Natural Areas Network and the City of Boston Parks and recreation Department for well supervised service event. We will provide guidance, gloves and tools. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring a container of water.
We will meet at the parking area at 7 VFW Parkway, located to the right of Annunciation Church.
