OUR MISSION:
Transform Boston so that every resident can access and afford healthy, locally-grown food and enjoy public spaces and opportunities for active living. |
Greetings!
Happy Spring! Although we have been enjoying unseasonably warm weather for some time, we officially were greeted with our first full day of spring this week! Spirits are lifted as we stroll, bike and run through our favorite places. Color is popping out around every corner, be it green, pink or yellow. Enjoy this time of renewal and take time to embrace the joy in your journey! |
Build a Garden
Do you like fresh vegetables? Want to grow them in your own backyard? The Food Project's Build-a-Garden program is now accepting applications for raised bed garden kits.
Having a backyard garden plot can encourage better eating habits and a healthier lifestyle, reduce food costs, and foster a sense of community in the neighborhood. All Boston residents are eligible to apply, but residents of Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan and others with financial need are given priority.
The program will provide participants with a raised bed garden or container gardening kit, (including soil and compost) as well as seeds and plants. Additionally, printed growing guides and workshops are available.
In order to make the beds accessible to all, The Food Project requires a minimum contribution of $10 for individuals ($25 for organizations) for each bed. However, those with the ability to pay more are encouraged to do so to offset the cost of a raised bed for another applicant.
If you're interested in applying, complete the application and return it to the Food Project at 555 Dudley Street, Dorchester, MA 02125. Applications are accepted throughout the year. For more information, email The Food Project. |

Launch in Boston
Food Day-the national campaign for healthy, sustainable, affordable, and fairly produced food-is back! Food Day will again take place on October 24, and organizing is already underway in Massachusetts.
Last year, Food Day activities took place throughout Massachusetts, from community potlucks and food drives, to food talks and forums at universities, to activities at school districts, to official proclamations by Governor Patrick and Mayor Menino. Check out the newly released Food Day 2011 Campaign Report for highlights of what happened in Massachusetts and around the country.
In 2012, Food Day Massachusetts is getting an early start. Representatives from the national campaign team held planning meetings in Boston and Worcester earlier this week with diverse community groups, school districts, universities, and representatives of the state's public health, agriculture, and education departments. Meeting participants have begun forming working groups around universities, youth, public health and nutrition, local growing, neighborhoods, and more. Conference calls and follow-up meetings are in the works.
Food Day 2012 is all about community engagement and grassroots impact. Join the diverse coalition of organizations and individuals that is leading the charge for healthy, sustainable, and affordable food in your state. Rose Arruda, Food Day's statewide coordinator, will be happy to tell you more about the campaign and connect you to others in the planning network so you can share your ideas and bring Food Day to your community.
For more information and to join in the planning, please contact:
