Since the death from asthma of a REEP 8th grader 15 years ago, REEP youth have been working to stop dirty diesel pollution that's concentrated in Boston's low-income communities, especially greater Roxbury. Diesel pollution has a negative impact on asthma attacks, bronchitis, stroke, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, and climate change. They are currently moving forward with the next major step to clean up dirty diesel in our neighborhoods. They have drafted a city ordinance that would reduce emissions from all city-owned and city-contracted diesel vehicles, including construction equipment on major development projects. On Tuesday 12/20 from 4-6:30pm, REEP youth will be leading a Boston City Council Hearing on the issue.
They are inviting all youth, families, and professionals connected to the issues of the asthma epidemic, public health disparities, and environmental justice to attend the hearing on the 20th and to testify in support of the City of Boston continuing to move forward as a leader on this issue.
They are also collecting supporter postcards in support of a Diesel Emission Reduction Ordinance in the lead up to the hearing, and would greatly appreciate it if their allies were able to help collect signed postcards.

Community Highlight
On December 5, leaders in arena of childhood obesity prevention, civic engagement and children's issues, led by Mayor Thomas M. Menino, gathered to celebrate the launch of the Fitzgerald Youth Sports Institute (FYSI), one of City's leading organizations in healthy community development. Formerly known as Fitz Urban Youth Sports, this nonprofit organization has impacted the lives of more than 30,000 children in Boston over the past fourteen years. The organization has been renamed to honor the legacy of former Massachusetts State Legislator, the late Kevin Fitzgerald, who is remembered as a compassionate and dynamic champion of the City's youth.
With the launch, FYSI is focused to growing its already successful service model and expanding its impact on the community through its newest initiative, SportsCorp. Designed to mobilize a new generation of leaders, SportsCorps will work to strengthen underserved communities through the power of sport. The initiative will see community organizers placed into health centers, schools and other community organizations to make real impact through direct interactions. The program captures the energy of successful service models such as AmeriCorps and PeaceCorps, and supports a growing national and international movement focused on utilizing the power of sport as a catalyst for creating healthy communities.
