"I would like to take this time, to deeply thank you for the beautiful books that you sent to me, which I shall use to teach my people the knowledge of themselves with hopes that they will break the cycle.  I could not and cannot do it without loving and caring people such as you assisting me.  For this I am truly honored and grateful that people still care about the outcome of a prisoner and the youth and causes which the world seems to have forgotten."

Keeping Up the Pace
giftThanks to committed volunteers and generous book donors, PBP volunteers have sent books to more prisoners in a partial 2008 than in any other full year in our 36-year history.  At this pace, we will end up sending books to 9,211 prisoners in 2008, an 84% increase over 2007.

Along with this historical increase in the number of prisoners served, comes an increase in demand for postage, at $3.00 per package.

In order to further the impact of your dedication, and our books and volunteers, please consider making a $3.00 donation now -- the package you fund could contain the book that transforms a life.

Beyond the Basics
Want to get more involved with PBP?

We are currently looking for a few more volunteers who want to deepen their involvement with PBP.  Here are a few areas where you can help:

Core Group:  The core group is a small team of dedicated volunteers who provide all decision-making for the current and future direction of the organization.  The members are generalists who are involved in all aspects of the program.  The team meets on a monthly basis, and communicates regularly, via web forum.

Fundraising:  Money is the factor that limits the number of people we serve.  Every $3 you help raise sends books to another individual.  Regardless of your experience, joining our fundraising committee would make a huge difference.  This would be a project-oriented role, with no specific time commitment.

Training:  Have you picked/packed a number of times?  We are looking for experienced volunteers to help our core group members run packing sessions, by training new volunteers.  A commitment of one night per month is required.

Poetry/Artwork: Are you interested in The Arts?  Every day, prisoners send us the most amazing poetry and artwork.  We want to share their talent with the rest of the world -- we just need a volunteer to lead the effort.  This would be a project-oriented role, with no specific time commitment.

Contact info@prisonbookprogram.org if you would like to get more involved.
Prisoner Writing: "Solid"
by Marleno Todd

The feelings of defeat is destruction of pride,
sealed as concrete through the unchained mind.
Misunderstood by many, recognized by all
Destined to make it. Over plan those that fall.
Strong constitution, uncrackable like a diamond rose.
Knowledge my power as my conscious unfolds.
steal as a stiff iron as my thoughts.
Wise man and foolish world as at a face off.
Standing on integrity from souls of roots.
Silhouetted off my reflection as the unknown fruit.
Only pictured in prison, speaking the unspoken.
The grounds of a man solid by the unbroken.
