Massage 101 Types of Massage offered at The Wellness Center
Swedish Massage:
Swedish massage is often thought of as a lighter massage meant only for relaxation but quite the opposite is true.Swedish massage actually refers to a specific set of techniques designed for their therapeutic affect on the body. The
benefits of Swedish massage include relaxation of the muscles and
decompression of the joints, it sedates the nervous system, resulting
in decreased pain, improves blood and lymphatic circulation which
results in improved healing from injury.Improved
concentration, mental rel axation, relief from symptoms of stress,
anxiety, and depression, and an improved sense of wellbeing are all
benefits as well.There are
several techniques that typify Swedish massage, these are
effleurage-gentle gliding strokes that begin the relaxation process and
warm up the muscles, petrissage- deeper kneading strokes intended to
release the muscles, friction-vigorous, rapid strokes to generate heat
and relax the tissues, vibration-intended to release tight areas by
confusing the nerve impulses, and percussion-meant to improve and
normalize tissue tone.The
amount of pressure applied depends on the type of stroke your muscle
tone and your preferences, and can range from very light to deep.
Therapeutic Massage:This refers to the intention of the massage rather than a specific technique. If you have specific areas of pain of ongoing or chronic pain patterns, this may be what you are looking for. Each
therapist has training in several techniques that are meant to
normalize the soft tissues and neuro-impulses of the body. Muscle
energy techniques: There are several varieties of MET's and differing
applications depending on the individual therapist and their training
but the goal is always the same, to strengthen, lengthen the muscle
tissue and to reset the proprioceptors in the muscles and joints.Myofascial Release:Fascisa
is the connective tissue that surrounds every bone, each muscle cell,
individual muscle, and muscle group, each organ, connects muscles to
bones, and finally runs in a complete layer just beneath the skin. When there is restriction in the fascial system it can affect any or all of the rest of the system.Myofascial release is intended to relieve restrictions in this system. The
therapist may choose to do this in ways that vary from very gentle to
very deep and from relatively fast gliding to holds that may last for
several minutes in the same position. Trigger Point Therapy: TPT is
another form of myofascial release that focuses on specific points of
restriction as releases them using static pressure.Other
techniques your therapist may use are strain/counterstrain, passive
positional release, active or passive stretching, pin and stretch to
name a few.Each therapist has
different training and uses different methods during treatment, make
sure to communicate to your therapist the desired results and what you
feel works best in your body.
Sports Massage:
Sports massage is intended to help
you prepare for or recover from an event or training as well as provide
therapeutic treatment specific to your sport or activities in between
events.
Prenatal Massage:
Massage is vital for the mother-to-be.It provides much needed relaxation and pain relief as well as reducing the chances of complications during labor and delivery.
Cranio-sacral: (specialty massage at The Wellness Center)
This
is not a massage technique in the traditional sense but a method of
treatment where the practitioner works with the cranio-sacral system-
the fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord and manipulates the
bones of the skull. The therapist becomes the facilitator of the body's
self corrective mechanisms. This
is a very subtle yet powerful form of treatment that can provide relief
from pain as well as profound sense of peace and relaxation that is
often not experienced with other forms of body work.
Hot Stone Massage: (specialty massage at The Wellness Center)
Heated
stones are used to gently knead the muscles and coax them into a state
of deep relaxation while additional stones are placed either on or
under the body to deliver penetrating, sustained heat into the muscles
melting away tension and pain.This
is a Depth of pressure can vary depending on your preferences and each
therapist is trained in and employs differing techniques. An intensely relaxing approach to body work, it is unlike any other method.
Ashiatsu: (specialty massage at The Wellness Center)
A form of massage performed with the therapist's feet, it is perfect for people that like a massage to apply very deep pressure.Though deep is not a necessity with this modality it becomes a possibility. It is great for releasing fibrotic areas and adhesions.Smooth,
flowing, gliding strokes are applied with all parts of the foot which
provides deep pressure without the poking feeling often associated with
deep pressure from the fingers.
