Did you know that 35 million people suffer with TMJ?
What is TMJ? The temporomandibular joints connect the jawbone to the skull. Located
at the sides of the head near each ear, these joints play an essential
role in eating, speaking, and making facial expressions.
Symptoms of TMJ: TMJ can develop when one or both of the temporomandibular
joints stop functioning properly. This may happen due to any number of
causes and may result in:
- chronic ear pain
- jaw stiffness and soreness
- difficulty opening the mouth
- jaw popping or clicking
- headaches
- sharp pain or dull, constant ache
Self Care for TMJ: Fortunately there are things that one can do to keep the symptoms of TMJ at bay.
ICE: To numb the pain and reduce inflammation, ice packs can be applied to the area. (Do not exceed 15 minutes and never apply ice directly to the skin) HEAT: Releasing muscle spasms, increasing circulation and movement can be achieved by applying heat from a heat pack, heating pad or hot water bottle. EATING: Try eating more diced or blended foods which are easier on your jaw and neck area. MOVEMENT: Practicing yoga, dance, chi going, tai chi, or any other meditative movement will help not only to reduce your stress levels, increase your core strength, but will also help with deeper breathing. BODYWORK: Self applied techniques and professional massage therapy can relax the tightened muscles, improve circulation, and range of motion. Try craniosacral therapy which is a light, non-invasive touch and myofascial release, which incorporates mild stretching techniques.
