Prevent Injuries this Summer!
With the beginning of the great weather we see an increase in outdoor activity, people trying to get back into shape or starting their favorite outdoor activities again.
Unfortunately, along with the increase in activities we generally see an increase in injuries, pulled muscles and general all around stiffness and sore joints. Tips for preventing Summer Injuries:
WARM UP
- Warm up your muscles before you begin to exercise. Do a light version of the activities you are about to engage in. If you are going to run, begin with a light jog. If you will be playing tennis, do some practice swings and hits, gradually gaining in speed and intensity before your match.
COOL DOWN
- Cool down after your muscles after your workout. Do not just stop cold and go home. Do the same thing as for warm-up, a lighter version of your workout.
STRETCH
- Stretch after your workout and cool down. Do some slow easy stretching, and hold the stretch for a minimum of 30 seconds. Fast, hard or bouncing stretches can actually have the opposite effect, triggering the muscle to contract. There is mounting evidence that you should not stretch prior to a workout or event because this weakens the muscle and makes you more prone to injury-and you should never stretch cold muscles.
NUTRITION
- Nutrition Your body will need lots of nutrients to heal from an intense workout. A protein shake after your activities followed by a nutritious well balanced meal will go a long way toward keeping your muscles healthy. Consult a professional for guidelines specific to your body and sport.
HYDRATE
- Hydration Be sure to maintain your fluid intake throughout the day as well as an electrolyte and amino acid replacement beverage during intense workouts.
VARY YOUR WORKOUT
- Variation don't engage in the same activities every day. Cross train, make sure you are using different muscles in different ways regularly to avoid imbalances. Also be sure to vary your route and terrain for the same reasons.
GET BODYWORK
- Massage/Chiropractic/Physical Therapy Keeping your body in proper alignment, and correcting structural imbalances is very important to avoiding injury. It is also critical to keep the muscle tissue healthy to prevent injury. Often people are inclined to use these modalities only when an injury has already occurred but they are as important to prevention as they are to recovery.

Sprains and Strains
Chances are if you are an active individual you most likely have experienced some type of strain muscle or sprained an ankle.
Depending on the severity of the sprain or strain. Acupuncture can generally accelerate the healing process. Some sprains take 4-6 months to recover from or longer and Acupuncture can cut that time in half, if used properly.
My first experience with Acupuncture was in my twenties when I sprained my ankle and was told by my doctor that I would have to be on crutches for 3-4 months. My aunt who at the time I had no idea did Acupuncture came over to my house and gave me a series of Acupuncture treatments. Within a week I was back to walking and within a month running again. I was astounded by how quickly I healed.
The philosphy behind Acupuncture is that is it stimulating the "qi" in the sprained area which brings more blood flow and "qi" to aid in the healing process. If you are curious and sprain or strain something this summer I recommend giving Acupuncture a try.
Afraid of needles? Not to worry, the needles used in Acupuncture are hair fine and generally you cannot feel them and it doesn't hurt. I promise. If you are apprehensive book a complimentary 30 minute consultation first to learn more about this ancient medicine.
