Benefits of Sports Massage

Massage has become an important part of the new athletic regimen.  As seen on the sidelines of many NFL games and at the Olympics, massage is one of the tools that are used to keep athletes in prime condition.  If fitness is an important part of your routine you should learn about the benefits of sports massage.

Sports massage is used by athletes, both professional and amateur, to maintain health while pushing their bodies to perform.  The general benefits if this type of massage are as follows:
  • Reduces the severity and duration of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS).
  •   Reduces recovery time between workouts
  •   Increases flexibility and range of motion
  • Decreases chance of sustaining injury
  • Aids recovery if injury is sustained
  • Improves Performance
  •   Extend the overall life of your sporting career

Massage works in many ways.  It has the effect of dilating the blood vessels and capillaries.  This action brings fresh nutrients and oxygen to the cells while carrying away toxins and metabolic by-products.  It releases areas of tension and spasm allowing the muscles to relax more completely and increasing performance.  Increasing flexibility and elasticity of the tissues creates an increase in range of motion which in turn decreases the likelihood of injury.   Scar tissue often forms in response to previous injury, trauma or overuse.  This can affect the tendons, ligaments, and muscles, decreasing flexibility and increasing the chance of injury.  Certain massage techniques can be used to break down this scar tissue.  Massage can also help reduce anxiety.

Techniques used in sport massage are often the same as those used in regular massage; it is the way in which these techniques are applied, as well as the timing of the application that differentiates this modality.  The therapist will tailor the massage to your specific needs based on your challenges and what sports you participate in.  In addition your therapist may add isometric muscle contraction and passive stretching to the session as well as cross fiber friction and trigger point therapy.

General guidelines for scheduling treatment

Pre Event Massage- Within 4 hours of the start of the event or training session.  Schedule a 30 minute session where the therapist will work the muscles with quick short strokes and compression, and do some isometric contraction &stretching-in general no deep pressure will be used during a pre-event treatment.

Post Event Massage - within 24 hours of completing an event.  Schedule a 30 to 90 minute massage.  This is mostly a focus on recovery, the goal is normalization and repair of the soft tissue, releasing any spasm and reducing metabolic waste build up in the cells.

Inter/Intra event- Between events, during normal training, at least 24 hours prior to training. Schedule a 60 to 90 minute session. These sessions are where you work on conditioning the muscle, balancing any postural issues, and doing specific treatment oriented work related to your activities.

Woman holding Neck in PainPrevent Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness
(DOMS)

Are you a Weekend Warrior?

Do you spend your weekends, running in races, biking, hiking, tennis, golf, frisbee, swimming?

Like many others here in Denver, you are taking advantage of the beautiful outdoor sports that Colorado has to offer.  But on Monday when you go back to work are you sitting most of the time?

Without regular conditioning, within 24 to 48 hrs. of strenuous activity, we are so sore that it is hard to move or function normally, do you normally take ibuprofen, Tylenol or some over the counter medication to reduce your pain?    These products often produce stomach and/or liver damage, especially if overused.

Oriental Medicine and/or acupuncture can usually significantly reduce the soreness from DOMS (Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness).

Why not try a short course of acupuncture treatments
(usually 1 or 2 if not unduly severe symptomatically) coupled with other non-pharmaceutical modalities will do the trick.  The greatest thing about Oriental Medicine and acupuncture is that it is also preventive and can remedy deficiencies that lead up to the problems in the first place.

We have an introductory Acupuncture special for all first time clients to Dr. Penny Wells.
For $99 receive 2 acupuncture treatments
(the initial and first follow up).

FUN FACT:

Did you know that the application of a simple little ball or seed taped to the appropriate point on you ear can increase your lung capacity during a marathon?
