Gift for Mothers Day
Celebrate your Mother
this month!

Ahhh...Spring is here, the flowers are in bloom and the sun is shining.

The month of May marks many things, the start of outdoor activies: gardening, swimming, camping, biking and hiking.  But even more importantly this month marks the celebration of Mothers.  Mothers across the world are honored for all the love, energy and time that they have given to their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, families and communities.

Take time to celebrate your mother this year.  Send her card, take her out to lunch, call her to tell her how much you love her.  Showing your love and appreciation doesn't need to be complicated or expensive.

Protect You and Your Family from the Swine Flu!

Allergy SuffererThere is a great deal of concern about the emergence of this new hybrid flu. The swine and avian flus have never before mutated into a form that is transferable from human to human, and have earlier been generally seen in poultry or swine handlers who have contracted the virus directly from birds or pigs.  Now it seems that the flu can now be passed from human to human and is of special concern because humans have not yet developed any immunity to this new strain, and are highly susceptible to it.  You can protect yourself and your family.

First it is important to recognize the symptoms:

General Flu Symptoms:
  • Fever of more than 100
  • Coughing
  • Runny nose and/or sore throat
  • Joint aches
  • Severe headache
  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea
  • Lethargy
  • Lack of appetite
Tips to help you and your family to stay flu free:
  1. Stay 3 - 6 feet distant from anyone coughing, sneezing or showing symptoms (This virus is primarily airborne and infection occurs when droplets from an ill person come into your breathing zone through the air.)
  2. If you cough or sneeze, sneeze into your arm, not your hand.
  3. Wear protective surgical masks whenever you fly or suspect yourself to be in the same area as someone exhibiting flu-like symptoms.
  4. WASH YOUR HANDS, WASH YOUR HANDS, WASH YOUR HANDS Wash your hands before leaving the restroom and OPEN THE RESTROOM DOOR WITH THE PAPER TOWEL STILL COVERING YOUR HANDS.  Carry sanitizing hand wipes with you and clean your hands after each episode of handling public doors, railings or public telephones
  5. Boost your Immune system. Rest. If you are overtired, it will be more difficult to fight the flu.
  6. Avoid Sugar and Processed Foods.  Raise your body's pH level to over 7.5 by eating as many alkaline foods possible, and avoiding acidic ones.   For more on the alkaline and acidic foods click here. If you are an isagenix user, you can take 4 ounces of the cleanse for life to help you get more alkaline.  For more info on Cleanse for Life click here.
  7. Test your Vitamin D Levels.  Wellness Center doctors can advise as to appropriate protective levels and how to amp up if you are low.
  8. Be proactive, schedule an appointment with one of our doctors to get your pH level tested, and we can properly advise you on immune boosting supplements to ensure that your immunity is strong to fight off the flu virus.
  9. Use Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs, Chinese medicine has seen many serious plagues and epidemics and is probably the best medicine available as it has been utilized and refined over many centuries.
  10. If you have any mild flu symptoms, Stay home and REST!  As much as we would love to have you come in for a massage it is best to play it safe and stay home. If symptoms are severe, contact your doctor immediately.

Woman relaxing in back yardWellness Tip:
Take a vacation in your own backyard this summer!

As more of us are tightening our budgets, it doesn't mean that our lifestyle needs to go down.  It is time to re-define things that we have typically done in new ways.

The "Staycation"

I recently came across the concept of the "staycation."  This is when you vacation in your own community or region.  The staycation offers families and individuals the opportunity to spend quality, non working time, enjoying ourselves without the hassle and expense with airfare and accommodations.  Now you can plan activities that you have always thought about doing locally but never had the time to explore.  What about that restaurant you have always wanted to try? Or that outdoor film festival that you always thought would be cool to check out, the outdoor jazz festival, farmers market, or just lazing away by the local outdoor pool or hot springs.  Things that you have thought would be fun but the busyness of our day to day lives get the better of us.

Think about it this way, "if you were to go away to Canyon Ranch for a week what would you do?"

Go to yoga class everyday, eat healthy delicious food, relax outside, go for a hike, and get a 2 hour massage?  Can you create this experience in your own community?

The one rule with the staycation is that you have to take the week off as a vacation.  Turn off your cell phone, e-mails, and no household duties, or paying the bills.  Hire someone to clean your house on your staycation.  Change your voicemail to say you are out of the office and your e-mail.  Treat this as a true time off.

With a staycation, you don't have to worry about travel time and delays, not to mention the dent it makes on our wallets.  With a staycation you can even invite your favorite friends for a night out with you!  With a little change in the way we think about vacation, you will find what an amazing time you can have just hanging out locally and relaxing.  Isn't that what a vacation if for, to relax and play?
